Do you have any advice to offer on buying insurance on my very first car for a first-time driver?

Any advice at all? Any recommendations, anything to avoid, etc.?

If your 17 give or take 2 years, I highly suggest you and your parents go to whoever they have insurance thru. They can have your car attached to their policy. You can then just pay your parents the price difference. Talk with your folks on this. I'm sure they will be glad to help you out.

Have you informed your own insurance company? You are obliged to do this if you have any accident regardless of who was at fault. If you don't then you could find yourself in trouble with them and that will affect your next renewal premium. By not reporting the incident to his own insurers and ignoring their letters he is certainly in breach of his own conditions of insurance. He probably thinks that by offering you cash he's protecting his own no-claims discount and excess, but insurance doesn't work that simply. He will be penalised heavily when his renewal is due. This may encourage him to not bother next time and risk driving uninsured so be careful if you see him around. If you have "legal expenses cover" on your policy then your insurer's lawyers will advise you exactly what you have to do. If you have comprehensive cover they may even take the case on themselves. Check your home insurance policy because some of these also include legal advice cover. If your own insurance does not have legal expenses cover then you must: a) Report the accident to the police. Be calm and factual and don't make assumptions. There may be some sort of insurance fraud going on that you are not aware of so don't get emotional when you make the report. Produce copies of all written evidence and correspondence and records of phone calls. b) Seek professional legal advice. If you are a member of the Co-Op or have a Britannia Building Society account then you can get this free from Co-operative Legal Services. Your trade union will probably also offer a similar service. c) As a last resort you can try one of the no win - no fee companies who advertise on tv.

Try shopping at http://www.insure.com/ for different quotes from different insurance companies ( Progressive Insurance will do a quote from multiple companies for a comparison but you should check with other ones as well) to get the best possible rate and make sure the coverage is the same from one to another as well as what options you have. If you have a newer car and have loan payments, you'll need collision coverage and make SURE to get rental car coverage and towing..rental coverage is dirt cheap and pays for itself in one day's rental if your car is in an accident and is in the shop for a few days or more. Some companies are better than others at claims so you should check with your states insurance commisioner for a list of companies with the fewest complaints...it should be in the phone book under state government listings or an agent can give you the phone number. State Farm, Allstate, American Family, Geico, Progressive are some of the top companies and maybe check with AAA to see what they offer for members.
The rates will depend a lot on what vehicle you drive, your ZIP code, age, sex, and coverage options. If you live at home or not, it may be cheaper to get insurance under your parents policy. And I tell people to get a quote every 3 years or so...insurance companies are always adjusting their rates because of too many or too few claims and what age group they are targeting for customers to compete with other companies or if their profits are down.

Avoid sports cars of any kind, insurance on them is always higher. If your a guy and your under 25, your rates are going to be high anyway. Economy cars/trucks are the least expensive to insure. Try to get all the discounts that you can; you can get discounts at most Insurance Agencies for air bags, seat belts, all safety equipment on a car, good grades, Drivers Training, being in college, etc. Ask about them. Also if you are under the age of 25, see if your parents will add you to their policy and just pay them for your insurance every month. That way you'll get a multi-car discount also. It will be a lot cheaper than being on a policy by yourself. One more thing, if you only carry liability insurance (what's required by law) also get uninsured motorist added to your policy. This is great if someone with no insurance hits your car; your insurance company will pay for fixing your car and they will sue the uninsured driver to recover their money. This way you can get your car fixed right away instead of having to try to sue the uninsured driver yourself and wait on a settlement to fix your car. Good luck and drive safe.

Avoid buying a Mustang as your first car. Or any other sports car. Avoid convertibles. Think what your grandma would drive. That will be cheapest for you. If possible, have dad add you to his insurance. Do not get any tickets. It will start high, you are an unknown after all. Enjoy your freedom.

You are not going to have much of a "choice", as it'll be expensive no matter what.

Suggestion would be get as NON-sports car as you can that has 4 doors, but still economical to operate. As old as possible, but not old enough to be unreliable.

Your agent should be able to explain to you what are the minimum legal requirements, vs. how much you *should* buy. There is often a huge gap between the two that requires a bit of bridging.
