I think the shortest answer is: because when people look at themselves and those around them they see a great deal that is not very flattering and would like to believe that there is something out there that is more loving, intelligent, kind and decent than humanity generally is. Most people can see themselves clearly enough to realize that overall, they really aren't all that wonderful. Everyone has their moments, and some have a lot of moments, but in general the human race doesn't have a very good track record of taking care of the weakest and poorest among us. It is a great comfort to know that there is something or someone out there somewhere that is a lot more capable of what we call humane behavior than we are.

I think a better question would be do humans have the need to believe in something greater than themselves. Arguments could be made both ways. Personally I believe that reverence for authority is taught from a young age for the benefit of humanity as a whole.

We have asked the "god" question since we first existed. There are many levels with which to evaluate this question. One is through classic philosophical theory. Another is the pragmatic, existential approach. And a third is prescriptionism. Big words, but simple concepts. I think the one that is most convincing to me personally is the existential approach which deals with the effects that belief in God has on humanity versus the effects of atheism or agnosticism. And don't fall for the "religion has killed millions" mess. Atheism has slaughtered millions as well. Fact is, neither of these have. Humans have hijacked every sort of thing to slaughter other humans. Study some of these issues a bit and then pick up the Bible at the book of John. I promise you...you'll be amazed at how this "irrelevent book of myths" is packed with reality and certainly treasures for the thinking mind. I'm up for talking more about it with u if you want.

In this world there are creatures which are less powerful than Human beings and when we think of quantifying the power inferior and superior automatically a thought will arise that there may be a greater power over us. More over this world is not perfect and two persons with same qualities will not have the same destiny all these factors create a thought of thinking about a greater power over human beings. I personally think that by believing that there is a greater power Humans can create a controlled society by fear of God.

Because the universe is so large and humans are such a small part of it.

Because life is often so painful and frustrating (and limited!). Many people believe that there has to be something better than their current situation, something perfect and everlasting.

If I thought that this life was the only life there is, I'd be angry for all the billions worse off than I am and ashamed for having a relatively lucky card in the draw. Believing in something greater than myself (that something that I call God) makes me think that someday the underprivileged will have everything they want -- if not in this world, then in another.

not every human being has the NEED to believe in something greater then ourselves but some people believe that i guess to have something they can go to and pray to that its comforting...its been this way forever...for some...its just a way of life, u kno, they wouldnt dream of ever ceasing to believe in a higher power...they have made it who they are...and its always been this way and its gonna be this way forever as well...

Self fullfilling prophecy and the inability to grasp thier own abilities.

By having something greater than man it dilutes the abilities of man therefore making life on earth less demanding.

Everybody is a part of the "something" that is greater than ourselves. Are there people who look at the universe and believe they are the greatest part of it?

Is not God Almighty above us all. He is greater than all the creations. How far is the power of man. man cannot even stop a loved one from dying but watch and cry. Everything on this earth is created for him. Even the larger creatures submit before him and we are asked for submission before One Almight God Who created and shaped us. Infact Little is the capablities given to man..but mostly his arrogent & pride exceeds and goes far above what he is.

Why is it man thinks nothing is better then himself? If I told you that your computer was simply created by itself with no help from man you'd say I was insane! Why then do you question the presence of a creator to something far more complex then your computer.
