It used to be believed that kittens could leave their mom at 6-8 weeks. But in recent years it's become clear that kittens do MUCH better if left with Mom for 10-12 weeks.

Unfortunately, most people don't want to deal with kittens for that long, so they still get rid of them at too young an age.

Also, people want kittens at the 'cutest' age, so they take them as young as 6 weeks. It's taking a long, long time to get the POINT across that kittens need their mom for at least 10 weeks!

Typically they can be seperated at the earliest of 6 weeks, but I would recommend waiting until they are about 8 weeks...That way you can make sure they're eating solid food good on their own and don't necessarily still need their mothers milk to survive...6 weeks though definately the earliest

I think it depends less on the age, and more on whether the kittens are ready. Are they all weaned? Are they eating solid food? Usually I've found, if they are weaned, eating solid food, drinking water, and using the litter box then they are ready. I would say on average its 6 weeks for some litters, and not until 8 weeks for others.
