sit ups will not make your belly flatter - they dont burn fat - they only build muscle and will make your belly look bigger especially if there is a layer of fat on top of them
cardio is the only fat burning exercise - 4-6 times a week for 30-50min and combine it with light weight training

Actually you should take it easy at first. You need to work a rhythm and a steady pace. Start with 16, then 24, then maybe 36 a day. You will see results. But if you work yourself too hard in the beginning, you will want to quit because it will feel like it is too much on your body. And make sure you inhale when you come down and exhale when you are coming up. Put on some music you like in the beginning if you have trouble getting a rhythm. One more thing, become aware of your abdominal muscles and not just throw yourself around. That is the secret. Try to use different abdominal exercises so you don't get bored quickly.

100 is more than sufficient. Situps don't always make for a flat stomach.

Here are some other important factors:
1. Low fat diet.
2. Walking does wonders to flatten stomach.
3. Leg lifts. Standing or lying down.

Sit ups alone will not flatten your stomach and could make your stomach appear larger as you build ab muscles. To lose weight around the waist area you need to work on cardio excercises. Also the right diet and nutrition will play a role in losing excess body fat. To check your ideal weight and bmi go to this web site.

100 is fine
there goes 2 minutes of your day though
I'd guess that you could do 100 a few times a day and achieve much better results.
cheers, good luck.
