H Mejia is the only one to give a the wrong answer so far.

When a female dog is spayed, her uterus and ovaries are removed. There is no 'tube tying' and it has nothing to do with her stomach. This is a common misconception among owners. You can't leave a dog's uterus inside her because she would be at real risk of getting pyometra (a potentially fatal uterine infection).

As some clever people have said, spaying reduces the risk of getting mammary cancers and eliminates the risk of ovarian cancer and pyometra, and obviously stops the dog from being able to reproduce. It does not change the dog's personality or upset her at all, spayed female dogs live longer and happier lives than unspayed dogs.

getting a dog spayed is when the vet does a surgery to remove all of the dog's female reproductive organs so basically they cut open her abdomen and cut out her overies and uterus and what nots then they stitch her up and she goes home, afterwards she won't go into heat or beable to get pregant or even want to mate (usually-some dogs are werid)
for a male dog to get neutered is the same thing-sorta-they would cut open his scrotum (or "ball sack" )and remove all the internal parts that make him a male with the exception of his penis (I learned the hard way that a dog/cat can still have an erection after getting neutered no matter how young you have the operation done) this insures that the dog can not shoot sperm therefore can not get another dog preggers...
however many male dogs will still hump or attempt to mount other dogs and even humans to show dominance over the other dog/human don't be alarmed pregancy can not occur after the pet is "fixed"
hope this helps

What Is Spaying and Neutering?
This is the surgical procedure in which the reproductive organs are removed from a female dog (spaying), or the testicles are removed from a male dog (neutering). Although often thought of simply as a way to prevent unplanned litters of puppies, it also has other benefits for dog and owner alike.

Benefits of Spaying and Neutering
In addition to preventing unplanned litters, which can be a burden on owners and communities, this basic procedure can:

Eliminate the risk of ovarian and uterine cancer in females and testicular cancer in males
Reduce the risk of mammary gland cancer in females
Make males less likely to roam, which can lead to lost dogs.
Make males less aggressive and more affectionate.

Spayed means that your dog goes to the vet, gets surgery and no longer will come into season, will no longer get pregnant with unwanted litters and will no longer be adding to the already over flowing over populated shelters... It will mean that you are a great pet owner cause you did the right thing and got your dog spayed!

When a dog is spayed they take its really naughty bits that can make more little doggies out. This then makes the dog less aggressive and live a longer life.

The vet removes the uterus and ovaries of the dog, so that she doesn't go into heat, and will not have puppies. It also prevents the possibility of several types of cancer, uterine and mammary cancer, that she could get in the future. Since there will be no heat cycles, she will not bleed and will not attract all the male dogs within a 5 mile radius. She won't get fatter or lazier (unless you overfeed her and she doesn't get exercise) and her personality won't change either.

It means that a female dog gets 'fixed' so she can't have puppies. Her reproduction organs are taken out.
It's the animal version of a human hysterectomy.
