I would say $1000 is a little low. $1200 is a little more like it. If you want to live in someplace nice, however, you might have to pony up $2500 to $3000.

Check out craigslist.com for the neighborhood you are interested in.

If you want to live in a halfway decent area, be expected to spend around $1000 a month. It does get cheaper if you are willing to live farther out but keep in mind the traffic. Lots of people rent or buy homes in outlying areas because they're less expensive but then they all use the same freeways to commute to and from their jobs.

Remember the rule of thumb: location, location, location. Check rental sites like rent.com for specifics because they can vary anywhere from $975-$2100 a month depending on what your needs are and exactly where the building is located: downtown, uptown, near the beach, etc. I live in LA county and the prices average $1,000/month for 2brm. Hope it helps!!

Save as much money as possible as you will need it. Apartments are not cheap and then you have utility cost, along with food, and more. Find an affordable apartment, and have at least six months in emergency funds save. Best Wishes.

I really think for you to budget less than $1,500 for your "decent neighborhood" is unrealistic these days. Of course it depends on your definition and which part of which city, but to expect less is too optimistic, I think.
