My Red Nose is 7 generation. We went through one heat......but now people are telling me completely different things, like, "If you have a litter of puppies, she will get protective, but too laid back." "Don't get her fixed, she will get lazy." Please help my family make the best choice. As of right now, she is just over a year, seems to kind of understand protecting, but will puppies improve her protective attitude, or slow her down. Thanking you in advance from "Smoke" (named after #20 Tony Stewart of nascar)

A litter of puppies will not change the personality of your dog. Nor will spaying her, change anything.
Granted, right after birth, she may be protective of her puppies, but what mother wouldn't?
Please, just get her spayed. As much as I adore the Pit Bull breed, it just seems unfair to bring more into this world, when the ones already here are fighting for their chance at a good home.

Puppies will increase her protective attitude, ONLY while she has puppies.. Spaying her will not make her lazy and slow her down.

It would be silly to have a litter of puppies thinking that it might increase the likelihood that a dog would protect you. Producing a litter increases the odds that she'll protect only her litter.

A dog will protect you if they respect you.. If the dog has no respect for you, she could have 30 litters and would leave you to rot if there was a problem..

People have all sorts of ideas about things.. I don't know where they get them, or who started them.. But they are so not true.. There are hundreds likely that I could come up with.. things people believing to be true, but never really researching or bothering to find out if it's fact or fiction.. Rumors are all they are... Some are so stupid they are hilarious and you wonder how anyone who thinks that they are smart.. could possibly even entertain the idea..

Oh well.. Anyhow.. Spay her, she will make for a better pet.. Love her and be a respected owner and she will protect you if the need arises..

Having puppies will most likely do neither (except when they are quite young and another dog/person comes close to the litter). Having her spayed will most likely slow her metabolism which means she will be less active and prone to weight gain. One can curb the weight gain by putting her on a starvation diet but to my knowledge, there have been no studies to determine if this short changes a dog nutritionally (not the same as proper amount of calories). Spayed females have a tendency to become more aggressive but the only study was only done at the Defense Working Dog Agency by Texas A&M so only one (possibly two) breeds (German Shepherd Dog and possibly Belgian Shepherd) were studied. Spaying before the first heat does reduce the chances certain cancers to near zero and increases with each passing heat until about 2.5 years old - after which chances of breast cancer are not decreased.

I might add that there is a lot of misinformation out there due to the amount of unwanted dogs being killed. The propaganda used makes it appear as if neutering (spay and castration) is all good. I'm a firm believer in providing all information and letting the owner make an informed choice.

First of all, you need to check you local animal laws, in some cities, it is the law to have your animal altered at the age of 6 months, as for her being more protective, if she has a litter, she will be protective of the litter to anyone that posses a threat. IF she understand that you and your family is there to help, then you will be fine, however, if someone outside the family gets to close to the litter while they are too young then she will be protective. Geting her spayed is not going to change rather she is protective or not. Dogs will be protective of their families as long as they feel they are part of the family. The best thing you can do is get her spayed. There are already too many unwanted dogs in the world today, so don't add to the problem.

I just had to say that, what painted.. said was beautiful! Thumbs up from me!
It's true, there are so many beautiful pitbulls out in shelters that are waiting for a loving home, why bring more into the world?
I have had every dog I've owned spayed/neutered and their personality has not changed at all. They have always been the playful (or laid back) pup since the day I got them.

So I would get her spayed.

biggest myth of all time that fixin your dog will make it lazy i dont why people spread that around

first of all dont let her have a litter it increases her chance of cancer the there are too many dogs in shelters

getting her fixed will change nothing about her personality she will still be a sweet loving baby. just with less chance of cancer

ps what are you talking about protection, they do not make good guard dogs, one belly rub and my dog would sooner help intruders into the house (of course they have to let her in to and give her lots of belly rubs) they could probably ransack the house as long as they dont lay a hand on me
