For me..it's the original beetle. I've had 8 of them over the years, most new, along with other VW models. There was a reason that 21 million were sold! So unique..Having said that, the 'New Beetle' has more comfort, better handling, better heating etc. AND, was rated the safest in it's class. Still, if I had to choose right now, I'd go with the original, mostly for nostalgia reasons. Many great memories...

I cant tell you about the new ones, but my old one does great.

All the weight is over the drive wheels and it helps to keep the traction there. That is the same reason why they use old beetles to build dune buggys and sand rails.

But.. to make the steering a wee bit better, most old timers throw a couple of sandbags or a brick or two in the front end to put a bit more traction on the steering wheels too.

New Beetles (1998 and up) are pretty good on icy roads by virtue of their front wheel drive and modern safety features like ABS and traction control. Old beetles are pretty much unsafe in all weather conditions because of their antique engineering, infamous unreliability and complete lack of any safety features.

My opinion is that VW Beetles are not good for anything.

As for handling on icy roads, the old ones were terrible, I understand that the new ones are better...but not great.

No cars are good for icy roads in the winter. Havn't you seen the salt trucks lose it on those icy roads this past winter?

Yes, but I believe older rear engine models are a little better in my opinion than the new beetles. Rear motor jobs over the pulling gear gives better traction and gives better control and prevents over steer in icy conditions.
The original prototype was designed in Germany for the icy Tundra.

I have a 2006 Bug and it handles really well in all weather. Test drive one and you'll fall in love like all the VW Bug fans.

Decent but not the best. The best on ice and snow would be All Wheel Drive, like a Subaru or a Mitsubishi.

vdubs 64 to 76 had (if working properly) nice heaters that kept fog off ft & rear windshields, engine in the rear that gave good traction;chassis was high off the ground , whichmeant going thru deep puddles was less a problem, flat nondistorted windshield glass gave good view ahead,,,engine was utterly reliable in weather that waylaid oldses, fords, chevies
