If in your heart you know your cat is suffering, you have had problems before, and you cannot afford to take care of him, don't let him suffer. Noone is going to think less of you.Your cat has had a long life, and as fickle as cats can be, I am sure he loves you and needs you to do the right thing and let him go. Follow your heart.

I'm sorry this is happening, especially to a young animal.

You need to judge for yourself when the cat no longer has a decent quality of life. Quality of life is usually judged on how different the cat's behaviour has become - changes in eating or sleeping patters, signs of pain etc. If your cat stops eating and lays around a lot, that is usually a sign that it no longer has a decent quality of life. Diarrhoea and/or inappropriate urination are also signs. You'll know when it's time. I would not want to call it a day though until I knew if this was treatable or not.

Check with your vet to see if it's treatable and put him up for adoption if you can't afford it. There's lots of good souls out there that can take on the expense if you can't.
Alternative is to get on a payment plan if it's treatable. Good luck, I feel for you.

Care credit can help pay for medical bills, allowing you to pay over time. If it is just progressing, then you need to cuddle your kitty and do what you feel is right. Often kitties will tell you when they have had too much.
