Revelations 13:18
Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding COUNT the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

The number of MAN is 666, so why do most people assume it's the number of the beast?
Does anyone know the Count (the Number)?
What's the number and significance?
I would like esoteric, Masonic, and the like, type answers if some of you have any. Is the number of the beast really 666? Why do you believe so. What are your sources?
Thanks in advance.

Some of you need to read CAREFULLY. The Number of the MAN is 666, it does NOT say the beast. Ye need to COUNT the Number of the beast TO GET 666. I'm not sure of the Hebrew being World Wide Web as 666, as the New Testament was written in Greek, and the Greek Letter-Numbers are Different from the Hebrew ones. I seen the Greek and Know the Hebrew ones. I'll have to look into that. I am already aware that it it must be interpreted as parables/metaphores/symbolicly. Seven is NOT completeness. Edgar Cayce states 9 and 10 are and I have proved it to myself. E-mail me if you want to know how. I found meanings and patterns with numbers. 7 is the Spiritual Number. I think I seen the History show mentioned in one of the answers where it is debated and Mention people who could be or could have been, yet they state wrath is not found in the bible. It is written plenty of times. Simon Peter is a whole nother issue. As Cayce stated, the Gospel are a mystery as life itself.

One verse is worth a thousand interpretations, and they MAY all be true. What abou Thomas, which in Hebrew is a nickname meanning TWIN? Like I said, that's a whole nother subject. Where does it say it is a human number and not a heavenly number? Some answers don't make sense to me. I don't think it has anything to do with it being a human or spiritual number. Mistranslation? I doubt it, but possible. I don't mean to offened anyone by rejecting their answers or parts therof. I just don't agree with some of them, some I can't understand, and others are just wrong.

666 is the precise number of years to the day that the Temple of Solomon was destroyed by the Persians and then the Temple of Herod was destroyed in 70 CE.

666 was listed by John, the last Apostle in the Book of Revelation- deliberately so that one day, intelligent people would make the connection. Unfortunately, people take the number literally and have no clue to the underlying message of John.

In particular, the Great Temple was said to have been destroyed, primarily by a great fire, on a day known as Tisha B'Av or Tish'ah b'Av. Its name denotes the ninth day (Tisha) of the Jewish month of Av, which falls in July or August. It has been called the "saddest day in Jewish history".

In what appears an extraordinary coincidence of divine significance, this day commemorates two of the saddest events in Jewish history—the destruction of the First Temple (originally built by King Solomon) by the Zoroastrians, and the destruction of the Second Temple. Those two events occurred 666 years apart, but both in the same month, Av, and both on the ninth day.

While Josephus displays a consistent disgust towards the “zealots” and their leaders, the apostles led by Simon Peter, he states it was the Romans that destroyed the Temple, by accident during fierce fighting to finally take control of the city.

However, later writers such as Sulpicius Severus (363–420), referring in his Chronica claimed that the Romans under Titus deliberately destroyed the Temple out of spite towards the Jews and as a lesson to end further uprisings.

Of course, this rationale defies logic and the general extraordinary respect the Romans showed towards the Temples of various gods during their battles and sieges.

Furthermore, common sense would dictate that such actions by Titus if deliberate would only inflame, rather then quell discontent.

Regardless of the stupidity and irrationality of these claims, from around 400 onwards it has become the generally accepted truth that the Romans not only destroyed the Great Temple, but did so out of pure malice against the Jews.

But ask yourself this question: What if the Temple was not destroyed by the Romans, but the people who were holding out against the Romans? Who was their mysterious leader Simon the Zealot? Was this the same Simon (Peter) the Zealot, the apostle of Jesus? How could this be?

If so, who is real satan that John is describing in Revelation and what connection between satanism and the two ancient temples?

NIV
This calls for wisdom. If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man's number. His number is 666.
KJV
Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.
NWT
Revelation 13:18; Here is where wisdom comes in: Let the one that has intelligence calculate the number of the wild beast, for it is a man’s number; and its number is six hundred and sixty-six.

The number 6 at times represents imperfection in the Bible. The number of “the wild beast” is 666 and is called “a man’s number,” indicating that it has to do with imperfect, fallen man, and it seems to symbolize the imperfection of that which is represented by “the wild beast.” The number six being emphasized to a third degree (the six appearing in the position of units, tens, and hundreds) therefore highlights the imperfection and deficiency of that which the beast represents, or pictures
A name identifies a person. So how does this number identify the beast? John says that it “is a man’s number,” not that of a spirit person, so the name helps to confirm that the wild beast is earthly, symbolizing human government. Just as six fails to measure up to seven, (completeness in a Biblical sense) so 666—six to the third degree—is a fitting name for the world’s gigantic political system that fails so miserably to measure up to God’s standard of perfection. The world’s political wild beast rules supreme under the name-number 666, while big politics, big religion, and big business keep that wild beast functioning as an oppressor of mankind and a persecutor of God’s people.

MAVEN, you're so close! :-)

Yes...'666' is the number of a "man"...and that "man" is King Solomon. (I Kings 10:14)

"Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was six hundred threescore and six talents of gold."

This is the riddle John was trying to tell us....for those that have "wisdom". The number '666' is nothing more or less than MONEY (gold)! :-)

There is an amazing book that explains this - "666 The Mark of America - Seat of the Beast". They have a great website where you can download and read the book for free.

You'll also be able to read EXACTLY what the infamous number '666' means. :-) Have fun discovering the TRUTH!

There is some debate as to whether it might be 616 instead.

It says "number of a man," meaning it is an actual number, not some divine number, such as 777, or 61.

666 is what the character of Nero Caesar's name add up to [Gematriacally].

Esoterically, it means just that what I said. Aleister Crowley was The Beast, who's number was 666.

My Sources, History Channel repeatedly plays a show on it. Also, Occultism it's self. It might have more meaning, but I've never read more about it.

Here's an interesting bit of info:

The "www" of World Wide Web in Hebrew equals 666.

The Hebrew and Greek alphabets do not have separate characters or alphabets for numbers and letters. Letters are also used as numbers. So each letter is a numerical value.

The Hebrew equivalent of our "w" is the letter "vav" or "waw". The numerical value of vav is 6. So the English "www" transliterated into Hebrew is "vav vav vav", which numerically is 666.

It has a chart to show you how it works....

Three score being 60, the very verse you provided says 666 is the number of both the beast and a man.

Read it again. Count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man. Hence the beast will be in the form of a man. What is the problem you have with this? Prophecy is only clear once the predicted event has come to pass. The purpose of prophecy is to identify the event when it happens not before.

Revelation must be interpreted symbolically, not literally. Throughout Revelation, and in various other apocalyptic literature of the time, the number seven is always symbolic of God's perfection, wholeness, unity, completeness, etc.

The number 666 is symbolic of the failures of the world's systems and ways of doing things. the Beast mentioned in Revelation 13 is a symbol of the varoius human governments that fail to flive up to God's standards of justice, righteousness, and good.

666 is a tri-fold symbol of this failure....six always meaning SHY of perfection, completeness, wholeness, etc....thus 6-6-6 is symbolic of failure upon failure upon failure.

They conflict is rather hostile to options and techniques of questioning, consequently they purely upward thrust up in hands about options which are available interior an same varieties as their options that would want to unquestionably reason someone to imagine. Guitar Hero purely calls for repetitive play and is tossed aside after the game has ended... The Golden Compass, on the different hand, forces human beings to charm to parallels between the tale and what they see in authentic existence.
