The saying inside of Christianity is that where the mind goes the heart will follow. Man has a nature to rebel against God and righteous ways due to our sin full nature. So it is easier for one to live a peace full existence as a "sinner" or non believer for it matches our nature. When we denounce God, we set our selves away from God and the devil needs not to win back the soul. So the sin full mind is at a rest, a false rest but seemingly restful.
If we are a believer in God and desire to live a life aspiring to be righteous then we have a battle against our nature and our mind battles the flesh for obedience to righteous ways.
Once God is (firmly) planted in a person a person can rebel against God but still believes God exists. One who has never known God can believe a multitude of ideas from their inheritance of sources in their life.
For me, No, I have had God touch my life in a personal way and when I sin, I feel great shame and worthlessness and desire to defeat the nature within.
