My dance teacher always had us set our fingers around our ears so that we didn't pull ourselves up with our arms while doing crunches. Those were very difficult to do! Doing front kicks and controlling your legs while pulling them up in front of you is also a great way to work on abs, and sideways sit-ups also.

Tied behind your neck? Never. Clasped maybe, but not tied.
Actually, the best way to do situps is with your hands crossed in front of your chest.
Sit ups work the upper abs, but if you really want to tighten the whole ab complex, you also need to do leg lifts, which will work the lower abs.

Either way will give you results. However, some doctors suggest that doing sit-ups with your hands behind your neck may cause you to strain your neck in addition to using your arm muscles instead of your stomach.

the best way - have your finger tips hardly touching your ears - if your hands are helping you do sit ups you are not doing it wright
