As an employer I always looked at the Veterans before others... Could be just me because of military family... not sure.

The quality of military training, especially in areas like trades, can be vastly superior to the training from other areas.
Combined with an a strong work ethic and discipline, ex-military can be highly employable.
It all depends on what you did in the Military. Were you are trained assassin working on black ops missions (I watch too many movies) or were you managing a transport pool or perhaps collating reports? These are completely jobs and your job prospects differ.
You will find that, with the same experience, your military background should make you more employable, but your lack of business experience in business could count against you.
Getting the first break will be the hardest.

Most prospective employers are eager to hire prior military. Military service teaches leadership, committment, and solid hard work ethic that are not always found in civillian jobs. Time management, organization, and ambition are also key traits found in former service members. These are some of the most desireable qualities in a future emplyee. Having worked retail management for many years, I can honestly say that former military members have made some of the best employees as well as coworkers and bosses.

Well, I remember that most of the applications I have put in for positions (whether paper or through the Internet) ask if you have prior military experience. And they have the option where if you do have prior military experience, they want to know what field, what rank you were, how long it was, etc. So yes, I'd say that is a very big plus for you. There are many employers who actually prefer to hire veterans, because (believe it or not) some of them are quite patriotic to their country and they also know that it keeps them in very good terms with just about everyone (whether it's a commercial showing their support for veterans and their hiring opportunities, etc.) I'd definitely say it's a big positive, and you certainly want to put that on your Resume.
Oh yeah, and thanks for putting in your time to help serve your country. I'm a youngin' in this generation...and most of us don't know all that much about the true price that so many veterans have paid. So, thanks for that. :-)

In my (limited) experience, prior military experience is ALWAYS a good thing. I believe most employers understand the level of discipline it takes to serve in the military, as well as the teamwork involved and the ability to recieve/give orders. There's also a certain level of respect for a man or woman who has dedicated part of their life to the defense of our country.

Unfortunately, most prospective employers don't really understand or really care about military service. My guess is that they feel neutral about it...
Some employers really like it though. It may also depend on the individual who is interviewing or hiring.
But regardless of how others feel, you know you learned valuable skills - leadership, team work - sell prospective employers on these.

Depending what what type of employment you are looking for you will be surprised how most companies don't really care about our hero's that take arms on a daily basis. But it does help on the aspects of being team players, detail oriented etc.

I was under the impression a military back ground got you preferential treatment. I hope it is a positive. I know it is for federal jobs.
