what happens after we die? Is there heaven or hell? What do the taoists or pantheists believe? Or is it true like the book of Conversations with God by Neil Diamond Walsh(sp?) that there is no hell? It'd be great if NDEr's reply too. However I do believe in God and I have several phobias which manifest as hell during my nightmares...is that what hell really is? In short all I wanna know what will happen to me after I die? Thanx. [Serious answers only.]

The conventional wisdom is that souls are immortal...that means they have no end...but do they really have a beginning? I've never understood people who think that a sperm and egg create a soul...personally I just think it creates a shell to house a soul for its earthly existence.

I imagine existence after I die is much like my existence before I was born. It's a different reality, it can't be compared to everything we know here on earth. That's not to say that our life here isn't important or doesn't somehow influence the ultimate path our souls take. I just don't think the afterlife is entirely geared towards reflecting back on your time on earth.

Bottom line, I say make the most out of the time you have on earth, because the indisputable truth is that one day you will die. Live your life to the fullest so that when you come to that point, you can die without regrets. Don't worry about heaven or hell. If you love yourself and your neighbor and do your best to make this a better world, you will be taken care of.

Taoists believe we merge with the Tao energy after we die, which was where we came from.

I helped someone do a major research on NDE's and it was fascinating. People from non-Western, non-Christian-dominated cultures described very different things than people from Christian cultures - until you examined the symbolism of what they experienced. Analyzing the rhetoric they used, it turns out they had very similar experiences, just with different visions and symbologies.

I came to the conclusion that deities etc are all just symbols and metaphors for something that is there, that is real, but is not comprehensible by our human minds. The experiences were real, but they were filtered through the metaphors the minds could comprehend.

I believe also that we are creative beings and that we will create our own experience of the afterlife. For a profound yet funny take on the subject, read "Johnny and the Dead" by Terry Pratchett. That's what I think happens.

I firmly believe there is nothing to fear after death. I wish you peace and happiness.

I can't tell you what happens when we die. But since we know energy can be neither created nor destroyed and we know that the human brain can light a light bulb, we have to agree that something happens to that energy after its host dies.

My guess is that it becomes part of the universe. It may even charge the womb of a pregnant woman.

But I don't believe we go before some tribunal to be judged. Such a belief seems to stim from mankind's fear of death and oblivion-the unknown, and the hopeful, albeit hopeless belief that maybe we don't have to surrender life after all.

Nobody knows what happens when we die. I am not religious, but I believe in God and in the grace of God. If there is a heaven, the reasonable, intelligent God that I believe in will allow me in, even though I never chose a religion.

People have died (not Near Death Experience - medical death) and been revived. I've never heard one of them claim that there's any kind of life after death. It's like a lightbulb - what happens to the light after you turn the power off? Nothing - it just ceases to exist. The bulb's still there, but there's no light. (Your body's still there, but there's no "you".)

Think of it this way - do you remember where you were before you were conceived? That's where you'll be after you die.

There is a book called Purgatory that you should probably read about the Saints and their descriptions of Purgatory and what lies beyond death. It's written on the concept that God showed the saints what it was like after death to motivate them to pray for the souls who would one day end up there.

I have had an NDE and multiple OBE's. However, I am an atheist and I do not believe in souls, deities, or afterlifes.

Ultimately, short of actually dying and staying dead, you'll never know what's on the other side of death.
