I am a poor student and I was summoned for state jury duty. I can't afford to do it for the $10/day they pay. I've been honest with them, but they won't let me off, so how can I get out of it?

(and please don't say it's 'my civil duty' because the court system is corrupt and completely beaurocratic.)

I was in legal Class...
Before you get "officially picked" you go through a little, interview peroiod.
The two lawyers will ask you questions, they both pick people that they feel will support theire client.
What you have to do is, be what they don't want...

If you tell me what the case is about, I could tell you what to and what not to say.

In most cases, if you explain you are a student, you can ask to be exempted.

If that fails, claim to be an anarchist or say things like: " The guy has to be guilty or the police wouldn't have arrested him, right?" or "I believe only God can judge, so I will listen to what God tells me to do." or "Now, where are the cameras and do I get to meet Judge Wapner in person?"

Seriously though - you may think the system is corrupt and way too beaurocratic, but this poor sap's life could be on the line and you may be the only thing saving him from being framed, or be the one to help bring him to justice.

Well, it seems the reason you don't want to do it is because they only pay $10/day and NOT because you'll be missing any classes. Any excuse you give will have to be proven. It is your duty, as an American citizen to serve when called. It's not like you already dished out money for a vacation or anything (for which they will postpone your turn). Just do it, you may not get picked, but if you do, it will be an experience you won't forget and you might even learn something. Nobody can complain about the judicial system until they have participated. It may just open your eyes about a few things. And if you have ever heard of a case where the person got off free, if you don't participate, you can't say a word about it.

Since you have already been picked, you only have one way out. All you need is a doctor's statement saying you are unable to do jury duty for medical reasons. Just think of something you have wrong with you; a virus, allergy, or even an upset stomach. If your doctor is a friend he/she will just write one for you. If not, just make up a symptom and tell him you need the statement and don't get the prescription filled. GOOD LUCK!!!!!

If you have a job take the check(s) they give you to personnel. Your employer takes the check(s) and pays you your full days pay for the day(s) you missed work while you're serving jury duty. I know this because I had to go but I was not picked for jury duty. At the end of the day they gave us a check. I took the check to work gave it to personnel and got paid my full pay for that day.

I was very good at being rejected from jury duty by being as hostile about the process as possible without being arrested. What I did was to let them know that I was extremely unhappy about being summoned and told them that it was a hardship and that I believed that my attitude would reflect that throughout the process if I was chosen. I was petulant, truculent, sullen, and as unpleasant as I could possibly be. It worked. I was immediately dismissed, and as I was leaving, I smiled happily.

Umm...I think you'd rather get excused than rejected. But never mind that...get a note from a doctor giving some creepy, contagious, medical reason. Get a note from your boss saying your job could be in jeopardy if you serve. Swear an oath that you're a single parent of an infant child.
Shame on you, by the way...lol.

I didn't want to serve either when I got called for it. But I luckly did get out of it because my husband is a cop and well that just doesn't float. That and at the time we only had one car and I was going to school. So it would have uprooted our life to much to do jury duty. I would call and tell them that you just can't do it, that you can't finanically do it and you have school obligations. they will try and work something out.

Just don't be so nice about it. Be prejudice. If it's a case about wife beaters or child abuser when asked say they should be locked up and throw away the key. Just make comments that they will throw you off the jury list. This actually makes me laugh while writing this. Because if I were to be asked and didn't want to go. I would answer things I know they don't want to hear.

Jury Duty is an obligation of a citizen no matter how cheap the pay. You have to obey the order or else you will be declared in contempt of court.
