How do I get rid of red in dark brown hair. I had dyed my hair red and it didn't compliment my skin tone at all. so I went to professional salon that put this ugly dark brown color on top. Now I got these red highlights peeking through from the previous copper red that wasn't successfully covered. Now I am looking to correct the coloring and neutralize the red in my hair completely.

I think I want to lighten my hair to either a golden brown or honey brown or Chestnut color. Not sure what to do because I don't want to come out brassy, red, orange, yellow. I went to Sally beauty salon and got Ion color brilliance permanent colors in 5g-5.3 light golden brown, 4n-4.0 medium brown and 6a-6.1 dark ash blonde. Also salon care volume creme in 10 and 20 gentle lift. Can some explain what I need to do because I cant figure out the color wheel to make desire level.

I am a warm tone with hazel eyes and my natural hair is 5/6 level from i was told.

STOP! You can not do this and have any kind of result that you are looking for. Color can lift out other artificial color. Depending on what you and the salon have already done, you can either have the color "reduced" or "stripped". If you are not happy with the salon that did the previous work than find a new color correction specialist. If they do not know the difference between reduction in color and stripping- not the right colorist. Perhaps instead of abusing the entire head of hair you can have highlights put through this base and then between the foils have this reddish color toned down a bit. That approach would be so much easier on your hair. It sounds like you change your mind about your hair color a lot. The only issue with that it is limiting to the colorist on what they can do later and of course product choices. Hair can only take so much, be care full. Listen to the color correction specialist. Hopefully the two of you can find the perfect level and tone to suit you and keep your hair as healthy as possible.

There is some bad and incorrect advise posted. Please book a consultation and speak to someone in person to clarify your situation. Apparently the readers do not understand what you have previously done/ had done. Because if they did and they are telling to go with this or some other "color" combo to get your desired result they need to have their head examined. Best of luck.

Oh you poor, poor thing! I've gone through the same hair trauma...I feel ya.

First things first, get that nasty color out of your hair. Go to a professional salon...they have the ability to wash some of the die jobs out of your hair. They'll get it as neutral as possible.

Next step, choose a soft color, not extreme. A rinse may work best. Get as close to your natural color as possible.

Buy a great conditioner. After all this abuse your hair's going to be delicate. Nourish it with a rich conditioner and good shampoo, preferably salon quality.

The whole process is time consuming but you can undo some of this. After you get your hair gets back to somewhat normal you'll be able to highlight and lighten things up.

Have fun and stay clear of bad die jobs. ;-)

I did something like that once, I had to go to a salon and have them strip the color. It sounds scary but they put something in your hair that strips all dye and then you are basically back to your natural color so you can re-start from there. I did it with a red that went bad, it looked almost purple! they fixed it and it was fine!

Try this thing called, OOPS, yeah it's really called that, it takes out all unnatural hair coloring, but after that die it the chestnut brown that you like.
Their are other brands of hair color remover's out there, it might work better to do it at the salon.

you won't get your hair noticibly lighter without stripping the color out of it and red is the hardest color to get out in all honesty i would bring the color back to sallys and call around to salons you trust until you find a corrections specialist (which i am) but you can make your situation go from bad to unfixable very easily

hey there! you will probably have to get this product called color fix from your local beauty shop, it basically removes all artificial color from your hair. next, you will have to get a 20 or 30 volume bleach, being careful not to get too much on your scalp(believe me that will BURN) apply the bleach for the amount of time the package indicates. rinse it out and DO NOT put on the provided conditioner, that will lock your hair strand making it tougher for dye to penetrate. now wait at least 12 hours before you do this next step, apply a semi-permanent dye in a light/medium brown. rinse this out after but do not shampoo for the next 24 hours. or if you can please please please go to a professional, you have no idea how much damage you will save your hair from. hope this helps good luck!

Buy a hair color with ash in it the ash will counteract the gold tone in your red.

Stay away from anything "golden" and go with the ash. The ash will help neutralize the red.

You may be better off, stripping the color out, with a color stripper, then putting the color of your choice on.

if you have blonde hair this will naturally get bleached by the actual sun in the summer. There was this guy in my class who also had golden blonde hair that was a medium brown near the bottom part. When he came back to university after summer vacation, it was nearly platinum blonde!
