I rarely see any aligned MS Word document. In fact, alignment distributes the words in a proper manner in the lines and the appearance of the document looks nice. But I see 99% of the Word documents unaligned.

Could you elaborate on it? Is there any technical reason behind it for not doing so? Thank you.

Do you mean right justify? No... it doesn't necessarilly distribute the words "in a proper manner...." That method isn't appropriate for all documents. Legal documents for instance. Sometimes there are large spaces between words, which can be perceived as errors. The US Patent Office would reject patent specifications in some instances until those "errors" are fixed. I use that example because I work in the legal field.

Personally, I don't like it and will rarely use it, and don't always think it looks particularly nice. I don't think it gives it "a better shape" just because the right margin is straight. When it's staggered (unjustified), it looks more natural to me. But again, it's appropriate for some documents, and not appropriate for others. And that theory goes well beyond the legal field. It's just doesn't always look right with the odd spacing if it happens too often on a page. We all view things differently I suppose. I have some graphic design background and I'm an artist. We (all of us) look at things through different eyes.

There are various types of alignment. Are you talking about center? Left flush, righ flush? Full block?

Full block can be difficult to read and APA standards call for left flush with an indent. No extra space between paragraphs.

As another answerer said, lazy -- but I expect some people are more concerned about substance over style. Also, many people buy a computer and just jump in - no lessons, no books ...
