The SS was established in 1925 as a personal guard unit for Nazi leader Adolf Hitler. Under the leadership of Heinrich Himmler between 1929 and 1945, the SS grew from a small paramilitary formation to become one of the largest and most powerful organizations in Nazi Germany. The Nazis regarded the SS as an elite unit, the party's "Praetorian Guard," with all SS personnel selected on the principles of racial purity and unconditional loyalty to the Nazi Party.
The Germanic SS (Germanische-SS) was the collective name given to paramilitary groups which arose in conquered and subject nations of Nazi Germany between 1939 and 1945 and which were modeled on designs of the German Schutzstaffel (SS). The Germanic SS was founded on principals identical to the Allgemeine-SS and its purpose was considered to be enforcement of Nazi racial doctrine and Anti-Semitic ideals.
The Germanic-SS typically engaged in such duties as serving as local security police and augmenting units of the Gestapo, Sicherheitsdienst, and other commands of the RSHA.
After the close of World War II the SS became extint.

There is no Schutzstaffel today, the head of it in Pre WWII times and during WWII was Heinrich Himmler...not Reinhard Heydrich as nomad wrongly stated, Heydrich was the head of the GESTAPO, the secret police organization in the SS.

Your grandfather did terrible things,. I hardly see how what he did can be described as a 'mistake' can anyone really shoot 50 people a day by 'mistake'. he was a very wicked man. James's answer above is quite correct, saving the life of one boy hardly makes up for the cold-blooded butchery of 1250 people. However, i cannot see that you are actually asking a question here. What if anything are you asking?
