It was advocated by both liberals who saw morality central to education and conservatives who had religious concerns about the moral implications Darwin spell out in the book. Fireball, you will likely get best answer to this because no one else will get it right. And to make this R&S compatible, will you pray that I get my paintings finished so I can get paid?

Acid, you got the "bonus" part. Mendel's genetics was what sealed the deal with Darwinism. So the rival theory was after Descent of Man and before Mendel's genetics was revived and brought into Darwinism.

Darwinism couldn't explain variation and inheritance until genetics came along. Hence a range of mystical orthogenetic / neo-Lamarkian ideas lingered (especially in the US eg. Cope) but in no way did they replace darwinism. The uncovering of more of the fossil record, which was little known in Darwins day, also ruled out orthogenesis.

Favored? Favored where? I suspect this is a US-central thing or something? I've been racking my brain but no serious alternative has been offered and taught on a global scale afterwards, and certainly not after Mendel's work was combined with Darwin's.

It would probably have seen something to do with Eugenics or Social Darwinism, although Darwin himself insisted that social policy should not simply be guided by concepts of struggle and selection in nature, and that sympathy should be extended to all races and nations.

And the reason why we still teach it today is because it works.

I'm curious as to what the answer is. I've searched and can't find any reference to a form of evolution that was favored over Darwinism.

You talking about Brownownski. That was the ascent of Ego, his PBS shows was filled with odes to his name and brilliance. We couldn't watch it. We got tired of hearing his name 20 times in 5 minutes.

At least Carl Sagan shows us some Cosmos!
