That's a good one Ludd, but speaking in 'tongues' means languages. So when people say that they have the gift of tongues 'languages', wouldn't you think that they should be speaking all languages? LOL What is strange is that when they speak in tongues in a church, there is never an interpreter to translate what is being said, why? Because they are just babbling words that are in vain, just like sounding symbols. I remember I had this conversation with this woman and she said that the reason that I don't speak in tongues is because I don't have the 'gift'. I then asked her how is it that what you are saying is really glorifying God? She said that He understands everything she says.
Anotherwards, this convo ended up no where. I just didn't have the gift. Even John the Baptist was filled with the spirit and he was still a Godly man.

Perhaps you misunderstand “tongues” as a gift of the Holy Spirit (and it is almost totally misunderstood even by those professing to speak in tongues.)
Here is what the NT says:
6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.
7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans? Acts 2:6-7 (KJV)
The Galilaeans spoke but every man heard their words in their own language (tongue).
Some Pentecostals today believe that speaking in tongues is a sign of indwelling of the Holy Ghost and proof of being Saved. However, speaking gibberish is not speaking in tongues the insistence of my Pentecostal Brothers notwithstanding.

Depending on which commentary you read, you can get several different views of this particular subject. The explanation I've subscribed to is as follows:
In 1 Corin. Paul talks about two different types of "tongues". He refers to one as a "tongue" and the other as "tongues". "Tongue" refers to ecstatic utterances; a language that no one can understand but God (to anyone it would sound like nonsense but not to God). "Tongues" refers to a learned foreign language that could be understood by a person that speaks the same language (Spanish, Italian, Chinese etc). At Pentecost the Jews spoke in other languages and were understood by the men outside.
Paul talks about both of these separate "tongues" in the same section of scripture, but it's hard to see the difference if you don't have a commentary. I hope this sheds some light.

Speaking in tongue is not 1 language that everybody speaks. It is when someone is filled with the presence of God and they begin to speak a language or a "tongue" that is unknown to them. Visitors from other countries have come to our church and have heard people speak their native language by someone who did not know that language. It can also be found Acts the 2nd chapter.

tongues isnt a 'single' language... and the only way to interpret is if God has given you that gift... it isnt something you can 'look' up ...
God is pretty specific on when we are to use tongues, should that be a gifting we have..... only to God alone, and if to a group, there must be an interpretor, which God will provide. If someone is speaking in tongues and there is no interpretor, ask them to speak in english (or whatever the given language of the congregation/group) is... for God won't 'speak thru someone' in tongues if no one can understand them

Nope.Xenolalia is understanding or speaking in a unstudied foreign language the way the crowd in Acts heard Peter in their own languages. Glossolalia is "gibberish' in a prayer language with the Holy Spirit praying with our not-consious self or for others to interpret (see 1 Cor 14) with a message. Tongues is the "babel that reverses Babel".
