Xanax is evil. It will seem like an angel when you first take it. Then it will stop working due to tolerance and if you try to stop it the withdrawal symptoms will make your origional condition seem like a walk in the park. Do some research on benzodiazepine long term use and addiction and withdrawal. Valium and xanax are both benzodiazepines.
Benzodiazepines are used as muscle relaxants, insomnia, anxiety, anticonvulsants. They all work the same way (on benzodiazepine receptors in the brain). Some are marketed for insomnia and some for anxiety but this is more to do with marketing techniques of the drug companies than pharmacological activity. They all work the same way. Main difference is blood half life and potency.
Valium is very long acting and xanax is short acting. Xanax is much more potent and addictive than valium but both can mess you up. Long term use of these drugs can cause impairment of memory, anxiety, agorophobia and depression.
It can be dangerous to stop taking them abruptly due to risk of seizures, psychosis and a mirad of other withdrawal symptoms.
Stay away from tranquillisers and sleeping pills.

Xanax is longer lasting than Valium, but much more addictive. Withdrawl from Xanax can cause seiaures and even death. Valium withdrawl is no picnic, but compared to Xanax is a piece of cake.

xanax is for anxiety, stress, sleeping problems and Anxiety attacks. Valium is a muscle relaxer. These two medicines are for different problems. So it really depends upon What you need. they are both good drugs when used properly and not abused.

Actually, Xanax is SHORTER acting than Valium.... Valium has a half-life of 24-48 hours, according to the Wikipedia on Diazepam. Xanax has a half life of 11 hours, according to crazymeds.org article on it.
Which is better really depends on what you're using it for. For sleep, Valium is better because of its long half life, but it's also problematic for the same reason. It allows you to sleep soundly all night long but can leave you groggy the next day. It is also very useful to treat muscle spasms, seizures, anxiety, and alchol withdrawal.
Xanax is a short-acting benzo. It is used to treat anxiety, panic disorder and panic attacks, adjunctive treatement of depression with SSRI's, which can cause anxiety early in treatment, and occaisionally Borderline Personality Disorder. It is rarely used to treat insomnia, but can be useful for the condition when it is caused by anxiety or night terrors.
Xanax comes in both immediate and extended release formulas. Immediate release doses are .25, .5, 1, and 2 mgs. Extended release doses are 2 and 3 mgs.
Valium comes in 2, 5, and 10 mg tablets, 5 and 10 mg suppositories, 5 mg/ml and 1 mg/ml liquid (called Diazepam Intensol) and 15 mg time-release capsules.
Both drugs can be abused and used recreationally. They are sometimes used with other recreational drugs to relieve the panic or distress of dysphoric reactions to psychedelics such as LSD and also to promote sleep in the "come-down" period following use of recreational drugs with stimulant or insomniac properties (such as LSD, cocaine, amphetamines, DXM, and MDMA along with the related amphetamines). They are also often used in conjunction with marijuana or opiates to potentiate the relaxing effect. They are also often used by heroin addicts to suppress withdrawal symptoms, as its effects in conjunction with methadone produce a high which closely resembles that of heroin.
Neither are "bad" drugs. As long as a medication is taken exactly as prescribed by the doctor and you do not increase or change your dose or dosing schedule without their supervision and advice, no prescription drugs are "bad" drugs. Drugs only become "bad" when used improperly or abused to achieve a euphoric or otherwise pleasuurable effect. If you use either for a long time, you cannot suddenly stop or you will have serious withdrawals symptoms that can include seizures and death. Benzos are the most dangerous drugs to witdraw from, but it doesn't make them bad. It just means that if you have to use them for an extended period of time (under a doctor's supervision ONLY) you must consult with your doctor in order to stop taking them and be tapered down to avoid the dangers of withdrawal (same with opiates). The first answerer is incorrect in saying that the withdrawals ONLY from Xanax can cause seizures and death.... this is true of ALL Benzos, and they must ALL be stopped only under doctor's supervision. All benzos work on the brain in the same basic way, so the withdrawal is ALWAYS dangerous in the same basic way. He is correct that Xanax is the most potent and addictive of the Benzos and the withdrawal is the worst because you cannot use another Benzo to taper down.
