Sadly, BMI isn't THE best method to determine health, but it's pretty close.

You pretty much mentioned the biggest caveat in the system in being overweight, but not being unhealthy.

Case in point - the governor of California or any bodybuilder - theoretically, they may be 250 - 300 lbs, but you look at them and literally see no fat on them - thus the BMI in some cases fail.

It ends up the best monitor of health is the fat pinch testing devices (or water immersion if you have the $$$). Theoretically, a combination of your height, your weight, and those numbers will give a better idea how healthy you are.

BMI is becoming a more widespread tool because it becomes a metric in which different body types, genders, and ages can compare themselves with a little flexibility in the mix. In this day of thin-by-surgery-overnight people, it's a good measure for us all to see how healthy we are.

Body Mass Index calculates the amount of fat in a person's body, based on height/weight.
It was based on average people of different weights, not bodybuilders. It does not account for extremely well developed musculatures such as Olympic athletes and pro wrestlers. However, most of us don't fit in that category.
All of us are at risk of becoming overweight, so don't worry unless you are 25% BMI or more.

the primary purpose of the BMI is to address the health risks that are associated with central obesity. the BMI uses the height and weight as a means to measure body composition based on statistical data. the various methods used to measure the body fat percentage are a far more accurate for athletes with higher than average bodyweight and lean muscle mass. basically if you aren't overweight the BMI is useless

It stands for Body Mass Index. Its basically a formula put together to get a GENERAL idea regarding the fat/weight that a person has. It isn't very accurate. There are lots of formula's like this one. One of the most accurate ways to get your percent body fat is to get under water weighed. Were they take some body measurements and weigh you in a pool.

BMI is your body mass index. A way to measure the amount of body fat and amount of lean body mass.

It's a popular method used to gauge whether or not a person is overweight. BMI is calculated by dividing a person's weight (in kilograms) by his or her height (in meters, squared).

However, it's been proven that BMI only works for 50 percent of people, because, as you said, it doesn't take body frame or muscle into consideration. Inputing some numbers on a website isn't going to be accurate for most people. To properly measure you need to see a personal trainer or, even better, a doctor. They do an underwater test which, to date, is the closest they can get to BMI. As for if you're heatlhy or not, a doctor would know best and not some silly website.
