Two weeks ago my mother asked me to drive her to my aunts house to pick something up, it was like 11pm, and I said yeah because my mother has been known to fall asleep at the wheel, and since it was late, I didn't want to take the chance. So I drove her to my aunts house in her car, on the way back the cops pulled me over and gave me a couple tickets that came out to almost $400. I have a clean record. They said the car had no insurance and the safety had expired, I didn't know any of this, it's my mom's car (Ironic thing is I never drive my moms car, it squeeks). Now I have to go to court, would telling them the truth about my ignorance about my mom's car help. I didn't know, I was just doing a good deed to help my mom out. And what is there to expect at court, I've never been to court before and don't know what goes on or what happens?

The reason I got pulled over was there was a car accident and traffic was moving slow and I guess they just ran whatever and found out about the expirations and stuff.

Yes you should tell him that stuff but make it short and to the point. Judges hear long drawn out excuses all day. Let him know it was your mom’s car and you didn’t know about the expirations. You’ll probably still have to pay a fine, but most likely the amount will be decreased.

What is it that got you pulled over in the first place? Having no insurance only gets noticed if you have been stopped for something else, so keep in mind that the judge probably doesn't want to hear another sob story from a motorist. Explain the details of your situation to him/her in a matter-of-fact way that indicates you had no idea the situation you were in and you would have done things differently if you had known. Don't whine to him/her and try to keep your nervousness hidden. He'll respect you and listen to you more if you show no fear!

Tickets for speeding, driving erratically, etc are on the driver. No insurance, registration, etc are on the car owner. Unless you got ticketed for something else, these aren't your tickets. Wasn't your mother with you? Didn't she speak up? You did her a favor, so she should pay the fines. Only moving violations put points on your license. If you were driving okay, don't worry about it.

doesn't matter. you'll still have to pay the tickets. i would ask your mom to help pay the fines though. it's her car and she knew about the registration and ins. by the way, what did you get pulled over for in the first place?

I think you should tell the judge about it not being your car and the reasons you drove, but you are still guilty, but the judge may be easy on you.
Good luck
