I would certainly color before a perm, honey. Roughing up the cuticle of the hair is probably just what you need and the change of color will be perfect for summer. Find someone you like their hair color and ask them where they get it done. Then book a consultation with the colorist and discuss all the options. Color does not have to be like the box junk- harsh and obvious. In salon we have endless options of products, some specifically designed for just this scenario. The concept of perming for volume is a bit outdated. The world of hair color is vast! Best of luck.

Dying your hair adds chemicals to it as does a perm, & tends to dry out the ends, but it's only hair, try going for a wispy style for your hair type, improvise on what you already have, try a few highlights & a wispy easy maintenance cut, make sure you tell them that you want the ends "wispy", this will add volume & swing to your hair! This way you just dry it & go, you have more important things to concern yourself with than a time consuming perm!!!

It depends on the dye...most of the time though...you will also need to get a perm.

A perm will add body but color will NOT. If you are going to do both, definitely consult a professional because of all the chemicals invovled-- your hair could become damaged.

No, in fact, if anything it would weigh it down.. not enough to notice, mind you, but it won't give you the body highlights would. The reason being, stripping the hair of the color sucks out the color and swells the cuticle, which is where that extra body comes from. Color fills in the "holes" with color, rather than just emptying them the way bleach would.
