I include any "isms" in my definition of religion Fascism, Communism, atheism etc. Statistically various Christian sects have been either directly involved or inspired most of the violence (in retaliation) in the last 2 millennium. The crusades, the inquisition, the holocaust, European Imperialism were all instituted to rid the world of "other" belief systems. The Aztec worked at it night and day and couldn't come close to what the Conquistadors did to them. Every belief system has it's shameful murders. No "ism" is without it's times of persecution and persecuting. You know what happened in places in time when the people in charge tolerated new and/or different views? PROGRESS. Don't tell me what the bible or Koran etc. say; tell me why the people who claim to have read it KILL?

Hatred, uncontrolled anger, bitterness, animosity, prejudice and fear are key factors in violent behavior in humans. Jesus taught that these are the attributes that should be eliminated from our lives. Most religions teach violence, murder for example, is wrong. Perhaps you could be more specific about which religion.

No, the fear of the unknown and the potentially threatening. Religion from Jainism to Buddhism to Christianity bans violence against strangers. Christianity commands hospitality to strangers and we will be judged on what we do to"the least of My brethren".
In the 20 th Cent secularism, especially atheistic Communism, was the major basis of most organized violence . Much violence to strangers is done in the act of robbery.
