The idea even predates the East India Tea Company (founded in 1600) as it is part of the plot of Shakespeare's (1564-1616) "The Merchant of Venice".

Ships used to come back with money after selling the cargo abroad. So, if someone owned a ship and it came back usually they would have a chunk of money.
