St. Paul disagrees with much of what has been said here. God, Paul assures us, will "render to every man according to his works" (Romans 2:6). The psalms constantly reaffirm that the just man is one who shows certain good virtues ("works").
The Catholic Tradition has read the Biblical message to say that God will reward and punish us based on our works, but that the good news of the Gospel is that God enables us and works with us to perform good works. We cannot be saved apart from such works, but we cannot do such works apart from God's gift of Himself in Christ. Catholicism has identified the 10 Commandments as the 10 "biggies" - a rule of thumb for what are some of the most heinous sins. Also, St. Paul gives us a list in Galatians 5:19-21 of the "works of the flesh" which, if a person commits, will keep them out of heaven.

The Bible teaches us that the good works we do cannot make us acceptable to God. Titus 3:5 tells us that it is “not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit.” So, a Christian is someone who has been born-again by God (John 3:3; John 3:7; 1 Peter 1:23) and has put their faith and trust in Jesus Christ. Ephesians 2:8 tells us that it is “by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God.”

you know a person can live a perfect life, not smoke, or drink or do drugs or go out and party all night, and do all the good works in the world but without the Faith and Trust in God that person won't make it to heaven. Its not the good works or how prefect you are or how you live it is all about the Faith and the trust...

work is the key word here. To be a christian and do Gods Will it is not really "work". But that of what and how you live your life thru Him. Let's say it has to be a labor of love sort of thing. If you just believe in Jesus or God or in The Word, that in itself will not get you to Heaven.
