This is the onset of what the medical world refers to as Rigor Mortis (it happens in many species). Rigor Mortis occurs shortly after death as the liver and other bodily organs begin to break down and the body will become limp and "jiggly". After a short period of time, the body will become stiff, I suggest you bury or otherwise dispose of the critter before you face other unappealing sights

Could have been anything, poison, oxygen deprivation, organ failure. and coldness of impending clinical death.
When you know they are suffering, envelop your pet in something warm. Warmth settles them and you as well. They see you and are peaceful in the knowledge that they are cared for to the end.
