While I think in most areas an American is no dumber than someone from other countries, I think my fellow countrymen would score on the low side when it comes to knowing about the word and indeed, their own government.

So, with that frame in mind I will say that the stupidest thing someone's ever said to me is,

"Spain is by Mexico, right?"
