Its not either/or. Using every avenue you have to find a job is your best bet. You must "sell" yourself in the current market. For every job there are 100 people qualified for it. You have to make yourself known in whatever way you can think of.
I suggest you make up some business card note pads. Purchase ready made note pads with a flap to glue your business card to, and then print out your own business card on business card stock. Send one of these pads to every job you apply for, including snail mail to internet jobs. When you follow up, they are more likely to remember you.

Say you have a really positive and love to go above and beyond what is required. Let them know that you will do what ever it takes to get and keep the job.
