Yes it can be stress and if it is still see your doctor. It may be an allergy or an allergic reaction to something. We can wake up one day allergic and even allergic to something or someone we have never been allergic to before. Every time I get close to a woman with too much perfume my throat clenches and I gag and begin to spurt mucus from my throat. I think I will die - and yet women still douse themselves with perfume rather than bathe every day.

When did it start? It may be a sleep disorder. Describe your sleeping environment and check for really dry air. Remedy dryness with opening windows or a humidifier. You need moist air to breath.
Dont sleep on your back but on your side.
See a sleep disorder doctor.

This is an anxiety disorder. My friend suffers from it, only with her, it happens when she tries to eat.
It is very common. Google "choking sensation anxiety" and you'll see. There are lots of tips on how to get help.

The symptoms you describe may be an allergic reaction. I'd see a doctor if it's at all possible.

you should check to see if there are any hands of other things on your neck. that could be the whole thing rite there. lol.
if you feel like you stop breathing or wake up when this happens, or have a shortness of breath when this happens you should see a docter strait away.
