Wantagh train station. To get to Jones Beach get off at Wantagh and walk to Brands Bicycle shop on the west side of Wantagh Avenue. Right there is a bus stop going directly to Jones Beach. The bus will say Jones Beach on top.

The closest train station to Jones Beach in Wantagh, is off of the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR). On the Babylon line (green) it's the stop for Wantagh. It's about 1 hour from Penn Station in NYC. You then have to take a shuttle bus to the beach.

this isn't an answer but a followup question, what time does the last bus run from Jones Beach, and do any buses run down Robert Moses Causeway? Does OBI/CPI still exist?

Oh brother, what part of Brooklyn you're going. You need to give a specific address so anyone will tell you how to get there by subway. Brooklyn is a big borough and it server by different subway lines.
