My school just had the most epic food fight ever, and the worst part is, the teacher barely did anything to stop it and then blamed everybody on the food fight even though most people didn't participate. So next time it happens I want to be prepared and to not get food all over me.

theres foods fights at my school all the time. i just leave the cafeteria. or maybe u should join in. sumtimes it can be fun

Wow, that's great! I teach English as a foreign language and last week's lesson was about food fights and herd behaviour (when one person starts something, then another, then suddenly everyone is doing it). I guess I was wrong when I said they are very rare at the high school and college level in the US! lol
I guess your teacher was just enjoying the spectacle -- and then realised, well, now I need to punish someone. The herd got involved so I will punish the herd. End.
To answer your question, if I were you and would not plan on participating in the melee, I'd just get up and leave as soon as I see food flying anywhere near me. If you make a timely exit, you will not get nailed -- unless you have to walk closer to the epicenter of flying food in order to leave the room. In this case, head towards the food serving area -- the fight WILL be halted before it gets to the cafeteria staff -- or, if food is flying on the way there too, you can only duck under the table and wait it out. If you come out of the fight clean, you will have good proof of innocence.

Carry one of those compact umbrellas that will easily fit in your purse.
When the food fight starts just pop it open and run.

take your lunch tray and use it for cover til you hit the door then run like hell.
