I would not want to live in the approach or takeoff path of an airport. I do live near an airport, about three miles away, but not in the flight path. There have been at least five crashes in the last 15 years that I know of, most of them fatal, including people on the ground. The second-to-last one was in 2004, and I had a ticket to ride the plane that crashed. It crashed in the street on a test flight right in front of me and 300 other spectators that it barely missed on its uncontrolled liftoff. The last one was last year when some idiot hit a radio tower on approach to the airport because he was flying too low and failed to notice the tower, which had been there for at least 30 years. All of them were pilot error. Needless to say, I will not be taking any rides on anything but commercial airliners from now on, and I am just a bit jittery when low-flying aircraft buzz my house.

Yep. I live in Sarasota, about three miles away from SRQ. And I'm dead smack under the flight path! Since I love the sound of thunder when it rains, I have no problem with the noise a jet makes. It makes me sleep better as far as I can tell. I grew up in Brooklyn near an elevated train line and the noise reminds me of home.
I like 'em all! The prop jobs, the little biz jets, the big ones, they all sound like civilization. Keep the woods, I'll take a city near the airport any day. (And the rents are generally lower also!)

Yes, right next door! I hardly even notice the sound anymore. But sometimes a really extra loud one will blast me away for a few min. Anyways, I've seen The Air Force One hidden behind a warehouse, while the one at the airport was a decoy! Kind of neat.

I live next to an airfield, rather than an airport. I get helicopters hovering at the end of my back garden. We also get lots of visitors into the airfield such as swordfish, spitfires etc. Now they do make a lovely sound.

I work at an airport, and it can get a little loud. Still, I like the sound, if I notice it at all..

I could tel with props the number of engines the plane has by the sound. I'm still trying to figure it out with jets.
It's getting easier, with the exception of certain busines and military jets, most have two.
