give examples of circumstances of when you would break down and call the police on someone else. Ex: college students always having drunken parties in front of your house.

To pick up the dead body of the home intruder I just shot.

It's like the old joke:

A elderly man calls the police and tells the dispatcher that there are several teens trespassing in his yard, and they are breaking into his shed. He is told by the dispatcher that they have no units available.

He hangs up and calls back a few minutes later, telling the dispatcher "Nevermind, I just shot them."

Three minutes later 5 squad cars show up and ten officers jump out, guns at the ready. They find the teenagers taking the old guy's lawnmower out of the shed and arrest them.

The shift seargeant walks up to the house and asks the old guy, "Didn't you say you shot them?"

The old guy tells the shift seargeant, "Hey, you said you didn't have any units available!"

Police in most cities are extremely busy responding to calls about people beating the crap out of each other, so whatever the problem is, try to ensure it's worthy of busying out an officer who in turn might not be able to get to a real emergency in time.

A notable call I once heard on the scanner:

Dispatcher: "Reporting party says there are juveniles sitting on a fence and she's afraid they might fall".

The assigned officer replied: "Call the RP back and tell her we can't respond to calls like that! Show me 10-8"

I would call the police if I thought they could help or if I had to make a police report to collect on an insurance payout. Thats about it. For personal safety, I feel you are pretty much on your own and the cops are there to clean up afterwards.

If college students were partying and disrupting the neighborhood, I would talk to them first and try to get them to tone it down.

At about 1:30 am last month, I heard a vehicle roar by, & then a subsequent crash. I went out & saw a vehicle embedded in a house at the end of the street. I called prior to approaching the vehicle, because I felt someone's life could be in danger, and seconds can count in this type of situation. Unless I feel someone is injured, about to be injured, or killed, I will never, call them. They will destroy anything in their path.

Well, I called once because I heard someone screaming "Help Me! Help Me!" and when the police came out, they looked around, and then, very disgruntled, they informed me that a peacock makes a noise that sounds like this: "HeWee! HeWee!"

So, I never call the police unless I SEE something.

I only call the cops if someone threatens my kids or someone else in my family. As to hearing stuff outside I don't pay much attention cause the apartments I live in are full of noisey kids and they scream stuff like that all the time.

Everytime they commit a crime.
A ticket offense, I'd try to talk to them (and if they were calm, again in the future). Otherwise, if they get defensive or don't bother fixing it, every time.

If you don't have the backbone to stand up against crime, you deserve the neighborhood you live in.

And when your neighbors watch your house (not you personally, and thank you for the post) get robbed and close the blinds and go to bed, you'll be grateful for their silence, right?

(Is that O.K.? Thank you for the question, and the answer was directed in general to people who don't call the police, and then wonder why they get robbed themselves and nobody stops them, not to you specifically. I get so tired of that!)

Good question.

Hello

Well if the students are drinking in public that is against the law. If they're causing alot of noise, fighting, or just simply leaving their beer bottles, etc. around then feel free to call the police. These are all distrubances to you and other people also I bet.

If I were witnessing a serious crime - robbery, assault, murder, etc...If I heard screams that sounded serious.

It would take something huge for me to call the cops...I definitely wouldn't call if someone was just annoying me with noise/music or if I caught a whiff of marijuana from somebodies car, or stupid things like that...that's a waste of tax-payer's money and the policemen's time, not to mention you could be diverting attention from someone who actually needed the help..

I would say when someone truly needs to be "protected and served" not just because someone is doing something that annoys you. The purpose of the police it to keep us safe, not to punish us for things that aren't hurting anyone. I would say if someone is in physical danger or needed help with something they couldn't handle on their own.
