Atheism is a belief in no god, rather than just no belief in god. Technically it is a religious perspective and not a big stretch to consider it a religion. After all, some atheists believe as they do simply because they don't want to believe in a 'real' religion. It's exactly the same class of belief as far as I can see.
However it is important to recognise that there are different types of atheism that run all the way from evidentiary disbelief in god through not knowing or wanting to know all the way to evidentiary but unprovable belief in god.
Only a very small percentage of atheist types could fall under the category of being a religion.

some chirstians don't like the idea of it being called a religion because the're not catholic or a particular denomination, and by saying you have a religion it's like saying you make your decisions and opinions based off of what other people have told you without actually doing anything to figure it out. which is what most people say about them. they have religions in asia and europe too. what they don't seem to have is people making sure that you're going to vote for them when elections aren't even happening yet, allowing them to fund research projects the rest of the year.

Most of us know atheism isn't a religion, though I could just as easily tell you why it could be construed as one. True Christianity is a relationship with Jesus Christ & following His teachings as a result of faith in Him & being born again. It has nothing @ all to do with beint born into a family that belongs to a certain denomination or with practicing certain rituals/traditions. All the religious trappings in the world won't make you a
Christian if you're not born again.

I was under the impression that atheism was all about a distinct lack of religion, but maybe I missed something.
And is America still buying people?? Thought we outlawed that 140 years ago.

Many Christians appear to believe that a dictionary is the work of the Devil.
Religion's definiton contains this:
"A cause, a principle, or an activity pursued with zeal or conscientious devotion."
That single sentence encompasses both Atheism and Christianity.
BTW, it also covers Trout Fishing.

Don't let it bother you what "some" who profess to be Christians tell you.
We real Christians who love the Lord with all our hearts and souls and minds and strength believe only one thing about you. You are either ready to meet God when you die or you are not.
Since Romans 1:19-20 makes it clear that you are fooling yourself by following atheism, and since the Bible declares atheism to be the belief of "fools" ( I didn't say that - the Bible did) "The fool has said in his heart there is no God." - direct quote... then you have been deceived into believing what you choose to believe and you are one of the "lost" people we are
trying to reach who is not ready to meet God if you die today.
Not quite sure what scientists from any part of the world have to do with your association with Christians being bought from other parts of the world.

People like to twist the definition of "religion" to suit their needs.
Personally, I say atheism isn't a religion for the same reason that theism isn't a religion: because it's just a statement on where you stand on one particular question, not an organized system with dogma and ceremony.
