Very good question!

I have been searching for that elusive dunkel (dark) bier (German for beer but better).

I was able to locate a fantasic Weihnachts-bier (Christmas brew) from Dinkelsbuhler http://www.hauf-bier.de/frameset.htm . This is a refreshing draught that drinks more like water than bier even if it is 5.4% alc, but is only available during the Christmas holdidays and my 5 cases didn't last long enough. They also brew Dinkelator, a dopplebock (double bock), which is a 6.9%. It too is a fine brew, but the Christmas brew spoiled me.

I just picked up a few biers in Amberg http://www.whitebeertravels.co.uk/amberg.html , to sample and see what is available in that immediate area. Among these are the following: Moosbacher's Kellerbier, 5.2%; Weltenburger Kloster's Barock Dunkel, 4.7% (the oldest klosterbrewery in the world, dating back to 1050), and their Hefe-Weissbier Dunkel, 5.3% (brewed according to the german Purity Law of 1516); Monchshof's Kellerbier, 5.4%; WinklerBrau's Schlichter Dunkle Weisse, 5.2% (also brewed in accordance with the germany Purity Law of 1516); and Bruckmuller's Kellerbier, 5.3% (brewed same recipe since 1490).

Best bier? Why, the one in my hand of course! ;)

Any beer that I cannot see through.

1. Shiner Bock
2. Guiness
3. XX Amber
4. Negra Modelo
5. I used to homebrew and I loved my Raspberry Stout!

Oh wait...and of course any beer that meets both of the following criteria: Free & Cold!
