I've been wondering this myself as I'm getting a new laptop soon with Vista but something you may look into is a virtual emulation server such as www.vmware.com. I used them to host a private World Of Warcraft server but it has the capabilities to run different operating systems like XP on the same drive as another operating system. It does require the operating system disk, in your case XP.

you might need to change the primary boot device to your cd/dvd drive in the bios first before installing, but xp should install onto a blank hard drivre or partition with no problems. it will auto boot into vista but you do have 30 (ish) seconds to choose which operating system you want. it seems to work happily on my system anyway. good luck

If XP and Vista are capable of dual boot, which they should be, then you'l probably want another drive or partition to install to. During the installation choose Advanced setup and choose the location you want the OS installed to.
