5000 years into the future? It could go either way really.
Well, we'll be in the next Ice Age. Merger crops, no more gasoline, and the specter of starvation (possibly)...because once all of the oil and coal were gone there was nothing left to keep the glaciers at bay and the walls of ice will have once again flowed over the land, squeezing human civilization into the warmer climes of the mid to low latitudes. The once great rain forests of the Amazonia, Asia, and the equatorial Africa have changed into savannas, and the once endless steppes an grassland plains of the mid latitude world are dust bowl deserts.
Now, if humans are smart, we'd do something to prepare for the coming Ice Age. The colonization of space is the best single preparation humankind can make for the future. That's why I think so much more research ought to be devoted to that field of science than is currently being done.
Part of the problem IS religion because people believe that God will come down and save them in the nick of time. This creates false hope and leads them to not want to improve humanity or take care of the Earth. Hopefully 5,000 years from now religions like Christianity will be but a small footnote in history pages. I am an optimist, after all. ;-)
The future may be glorious, filled with wonders far beyond our current comprehension, assuming certain religions don't succeed in dragging civilization back to the stone age, technological progress will profoundly impact society in the near future. We should try to harness the awesome power of nanotechnology, AI, genetic engineering, and other advanced technologies for our benefit. We must evolve, or die trying. From a survivalist point of view, this is the only rational strategy.

Remember that old Zagar and Evans song, "In the Year 2525"? Yeah, that song completely foretold all of it.
In the year 2525
If man is still alive
If woman can survive
They may find
In the year 3535
Ain't gonna need to tell the truth, tell no lies
Everything you think, do, and say
Is in the pill you took today
In the year 4545
Ain't gonna need your teeth, won't need your eyes
You won't find a thing to chew
Nobody's gonna look at you
In the year 5555
Your arms are hanging limp at your sides
Your legs got nothing to do
Some machine is doing that for you
In the year 6565
Ain't gonna need no husband, won't need no wife
You'll pick your son, pick your daughter too
From the bottom of a long glass tube' Whoooa
In the year 7510
If God's a-comin' he ought to make it by then
Maybe he'll look around himself and say
Guess it's time for the Judgement day
In the year 8510
God is gonna shake his mighty head then
He'll either say I'm pleased where man has been
Or tear it down and start again
In the year 9595
I'm kinda wondering if man is gonna be alive
He's taken everything this old earth can give
And he ain't put back nothing
Now it's been 10,000 years
Man has cried a billion tears
For what he never knew
Now man's reign is through
But through eternal night
The twinkling of starlight
So very far away
Maybe it's only yesterday
In the year 2525...
And by that time, either it's going to be proven that there is a God, or it's going to be proven that there's not. I'd like to see it.

Religion has reached a cancerous state. People are afraid to get too smart.
Religion has made people afraid that certain technologies ONLY belong to God and that man should not mess with anything so "demonic".
Because of the prevalence of religion, technology has reached a standstill. Problems that could be solved remain unsolved because ministers everywhere warn against angering the almighty God by going further with it.
Prayer replaces doctors as people no longer believe in medicines. People now die from cancer and other things, all while being told that if they die, it was just their time to go.
Ministers preach with even more fervency than ever before, that the Bible proclaims that Jesus's return is SOON, even night at the door, closer than ever before, so you better get saved before you roast in hell, totally disregarding the fact that fearful and unbelieving shall not enter the kingdom of heaven according to God.
Religion and faith have replaces research and facts. Fear and war replace love and peace. Even more religious divisions now exist, with all people everywhere proclaiming their god is the only and one and true and living God.
No matter which religion or God you choose, you will somehow burn in hell because you picked the wrong one. And no-one anywhere will show you miracles, even though they claim that miracles follow those who worship their God.
"True" evidence of miracles in all religions will be stated as such things like, living is a miracle, the sun rising every day is a miracles, etc, anything that is difficult to explain will be automatically relegated to the impossible for man or miracle category instead of attempting to learn or research things.
Man is reduced back to caveman status by fear and religion.
Religious extremist everywhere start constant wars over who is the best religion, while proclaiming that their God doesn't need man to fight for them (but they still insist on the wars, which contradict their philosophy, and which run contrary to the teachings of loving your enemies, not killing them)
In the guise of doing good, evil replaces good in the form of religion.

A world of city states, each warring with one another for natural resources necessary for their survival. Many areas of the planet are uninhabitable due to radiation. Population is much less than it is today due to a number of rampant and deadly viruses, in addition to war, lack of food. The ecosystem crashed over a few decades in the late 2000's and could no longer support the human population of over 10Billion.
It's not going to be a pretty place.
Human nature will not change, so the poor and the downtrodden will be rallied by new religious leaders who's views are even more fractured and intolerant than they are today.
Oh- the hole in the O-zone layer didn't get any bigger since we stopped using chloroflorocarbons in the 80's. That's nice.

Hmmm...
Possibly it might be that the Universe as we know it doesn't exist any more.
If your time machine traveled strictly on the physical plane, it could be that we will ride into nothing. (I hope we are in a closed system, and that we have a bit of atmosphere with us, and that there is a reverse on the thing, and that we can actually go back, cuz if there is nothing, then we're in deep doo doo...)
If that is so, we've missed the BIG MOMENT...Christ has returned, as He promised.
If you should figure out how to do this, and find what I suspect you will find, just in case you can't get back, I'll say it now.
I told you so...

fairly. people 5000 years in the past regarded fairly different than people in the present day. Evolution takes a sprint longer to make drastic differences. even however i'm going to get flamed for affirming Evolution, this is the certainty.

Streets of Gold, River of Life, No more tears, death or pain, Never ending joy and happiness, peace like a river. I could go on but read Revelation 21-22. This tells it all. P.S. it won't be that long

- non existant- we have ethier evolved though thechnology to the point that we can no longer be decribed as human or we have killed eachother off.
- Nothing that we could posibly comprehend or understand. Imagine a cave man droped in the middle of times square.
- yet to be determened though religion might evolve into camps of different scientific theories
A very interesting book on the subject is called
