I understand that there are no interchangable parts between an Impala SS that I can buy off of a GM dealership and the Impala SS that is used in Nascar racing except the name.
I don't get it! The one at the dealership is by the way stock!

In the beginning the cars raced were called pure stock.In 1949 Bill Fances Organization NATIONAL ASSOCIATION for STOCK CAR AUTOMOBILE RACING,thus the name was coined stockcar, since the cars were built from stock that was purchased from the manufacturer.This was true thru early 70's when the cars were downed sized.
Banjo Mathews developed a way to fabricate the cars from sheet metal with the hood - green house- and rear dec being stock.As the 90's rolled in the rolled sheetmetal was replacing the factory parts.
Today stockcar is the only stock item left from the original stockcar.

The early days of stock-car racing really did use 'stock' cars from the dealer's lots. This was the beginning of Nascar.
After a while racers started modifying their stock cars for more speed, and eventually Nascar was set up to provide rules for how much modification was acceptable (and fair).
At least that Impala SS sort of 'looks' like something you could buy from your local Chevy dealer (as opposed to a Formula 1 race car).

Because Nascar is an acronym for the National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing. And you can go buy the engine block as a stock part.

Actually you can but not feasable. The only thing "stock" on NASCAR cars are the engine block. My dream is to build a street legal Jeff Gordon "Nicorette" car like this guy did with the pepsi. Click the link, no joke.

Why are some people so anal about that? That's what I don't get.
I read on another site that some lawyer wanted to sue them to change the name. Huh?!!??
Why do they call them Indy car's when they race elsewhere?
Why does the NBA call them back boards when there made out of glass and not wood anymore?!
Why do they call them TV set's when you only get one?!
Why do they call them 7-11's when there open 24 hour's now instead of from 7am to 11pm?!
