because when you dont eat you lose water weight and muscle not fat and also slow down metabolism
i was hit by a car in december and i spent 11 days in hospital - all the time in bed i couldnt even get out of it (i had 2 surgeries on my leg because of 8 fractures) I lost at least 30lbs because i lost all the muscle i had - i was dancer so i did have a lot of muscle (worked out a lot)
I didnt want to lose my muscle but thats just what happens when you dont eat and dont move

It's different when you are sick. You're body is unable to function properly and you may not drink enough or eat what you need to and get a little dehydrated, and that can be where the weight loss is coming from.

If you stop eating for a day or two, you will lose fat because your body will burn it for fuel.
After about 36 hours, though, your body will switch into "starvation" mode. Your body chemistry thinks that you're starving, and conserves fat. You will burn muscle (including heart muscle, by the way) for energy, but conserve fat.
Then, when you do eat again, your body will immediately store every spare calorie as fat.
The same is true if you just eat a few hundred calories per day. Your body will enter starvation mode (though it takes longer than if you fast completely), and you will stop burning fat as a primary source of energy for your daily life.
The best way to consistently burn fat is to eat small, healthy snacks all day long to keep your body fueled, and to do some sort of aerobic (meaning "with air") activity. Your body will combine the oxygen with the fat to create energy, and your body will happily burn fat all day long, using the calories from the food you eat to fuel your normal body functions including breathing, thinking, walking around, heartbeat, and similar.
Don't starve yourself.

because your ill and not eating. But it returns when your well again. Not eating will help you lose weight for a short period but you will gain that all back plus more later because your body thinks it is starving and anything and everything you eat after you starved yourself will be stored and not burned off so you will accumulate fat because your body thinks it may starve again. go ahead try it.

It's not that you don't lose weight, but you don't lose fat. You probably just lost fluid when you were unwell. People that don't eat for longer lose a lot of their muscle mass, and not much fat.

Does it last? NO! And you are causing your body to go into starvation mode, which overall will cause you to gain weight.
