Even at this stage I do not think we will ever even get close to an agreement to disarm all nuclear weapons, and because of this, more countries over time will be forced to strive to become nuclear powers.

I really think we are beyond the point of no return, and we are in a countdown.

Yes. And the countdown is at about T-minus 2 and counting.

It could be 28 minutes from now or 280 years from now. When the superpowers get involved, then come back and we'll talk nuclear war and WWIII.

Unfortunately, WWIII will be global suicide, therefore in answer to your question, as long as there's rational superpowers who believe in MAD, there will be no WW3. By definition, the next world war wil be nuclear, how could it not. In a nuclear war there will be no winner. In a nuclear world, the only true enemy is war itself.

The next World War will involve a nuclear exchange, how could it not if both sides believe no price for victory will be too high. In the first 30 minutes, nearly a billion people will have been vaporised, mostly in the US, Russia, Europe, China and Japan. Another 1.5 billion will die shortly thereafter from radiation poisoning. The northern hemisphere will be plunged into prolonged agony and barbarity.

Eventually the nuclear winter will spread to the southern hemisphere and all plant life will die. You ask what country would be victorious, you are asking when will we commit global suicide. My answer is it won't happen soon because the larger superpowers are more rational than the rump states in the middle east.

While we hear talk of a nuclear-Iran or a confrontation with NorKor, little is said about the 2 bulls in the glass shop. The arsenals of Russia and the US are enough to destroy a million Hiroshimas. But there are fewer than 3000 cities on the Earth with populations of 100,000 or more. You cannot find anything like a million Hiroshimas to obliterate. Prime military and industrial targets that are far from cities are comparatively rare. Our biggest threat is from an accidental launch by the Russians.

At the point of global suicide, it doesn't matter who is on what side.... In a nuclear age like i said before, the only true enemy is war itself.

Forget agreements. The world is too fractured and too many have nuclear ability.

It will more than likely happen one of two ways. First, a accident. Secondly and more likely the cause some tin horn leader of a country or terrorist group will set one off.

Evidence indicates there are efforts being made by groups to purchase a device small enough to be easily transported as there is no need to drop it from a plane.

It will be shipped in off a container ship (or a suitcase under diplomatic protection?) and detonated either by signal, timer or suicide bomber. This would mean a port city is likely. Factor in prevailing winds and a good port to set it off would be in somewhere in the U.S. Northwest. Radiation would spread all across the country. Present technology us being used to "sniff" the air at terminals for traces of radiation. This is effective but not enough sniffers are in service.

The lowest form of nuclear detonation will be a lot of radioactive material wrapped around a conventional explosive, hence making several square blocks dangerous to be in. This will be much easier to accomplish.

If the tin horns and terrorists are nothing, they are patient. It is only a matter of time....And Starvin'Marvin, a follow up question if one goes off is: What will we do about it?

I agree, but I doubt that anything more than a terrorist attack (as horrible as that might be) will happen here because our response would be utter devastation of the attacker. Tel Aviv and Mecca, however, are probably living on borrowed time, along with much of the rest of the Mid East.

It will be in the next 10 years and Iran will forever after be known as the worlds largest sheet of glass.

Yes. I believe we're in a countdown.
When?
1.) Terrorist now uses nukes to spread terror - OMG!
2.) Misinformation - It happens once but thank God, they learn it's a false alarm before they hit the switch!
3.) Accidental launch - I dunno but I heard nukes are targeted on open ocean so that they'll not blast somebody accidentally.
4.) Desperation - no doubt.
5.) Another cold war - perhaps...

If it happens during my lifetime, I for one would like to be at ground zero. Because it would definately be the biggest explosion I have ever seen.
