I had this problem. Have a bath and soak your belly then squeeze the pus out. It'll hurt but will come out a lot easier than squeezing when dry. Get some anteseptic and put it on straight after. It'll sting like hell though! Keep it as clean as you can. NEVER touch it with your fingers unless you have washed them first, it'll get infected again. You may have to this a few times as they get infected really easily. Took a good month for mine to heal up properly after.
That was 6 years ago and it's perfectly fine now, never had any problems since.

RE:
How can you treat a infected belly button piercing?
I have had my belly button pierced since last June or July. The top part of the piercing is fine. The second hole gets all red and has like a little bump or something around the jewelry. And it has puss coming outta it at times. I really want to keep my belly button pierced, but I need to find out...

ok, so that was REALLY dumb. as you know. First things first, it's infected, and it probably isn't going to just go away. so I'd recommend open it up again, but with a sterilized needle if available, if not, put a needle into a pressure cooker if u have one, if not, bleach it/burn it/boil it, and wash ur hands and the area. Then, open up the bump, get out the puss, and do a salt soak. Put in jewellry if possible (that's meant for fresh piercings btw, not like cheap $5 belly button rings that u get at Claire's), and wash it with unscented-uncoloured soap, like neutrogena, or glycerin soap. Keep washing it twice a day with the soap, and do salt soaks too when necessary. Look up more info on google if necessary about fresh piercings, and what to do if it gets infected. If it doesn't get better though, i'd recommend going to your local piercing studio (not claire's or a mall place!) and asking for info on an infected piercing, or a recommended doctor, since most doctors don't have much experience dealing with piercings/they dont want to. I know a girl who got her ears pierced with a gun, and it was obviously infected, but the doctor told her it was an allergic reaction since he was an idiot. lo and behold, she trusted her doctor over a person with multiple piercings (albeit i am her age), and she still has red bumnps on her ears to this day.

you can treat it with saline solution - cooking salt, water - boil it up until the salt dissolves and allow to cool, can keep in a little bottle. Treat 3 or 4 times a day until the infection clears and then am and pm for ever more. Belly button piercings are notorious for going bad around 2 out of 3. if you are in doubt see your GP as possible to experience complications and in extreme circumstances removal be surgery. Hope it heals :0)

Keeping it clean helps a lot. I use Satin
(http://www.bodyartforms.com/productdetails.asp?ProductID=474) on all my piercings and so far its made all the bumps go away.
I've also used something thats made for contacts called sterile Saline solution. You can get it pretty much anywhere. I spray some on a q-tip and rub it around the area to clean it.
Changing the jewelry might help as well - the shape/weight of certain jewelry puts pressure around the opening and can make those annoying bumps form.
And of course make sure your hands are clean before you touch any piercing!

Wash twice daily with antibacterial soap and apply Bactine solution. Use a blow dryer on cool setting to dry it completely after cleansing and disinfecting.
Make a solution of 1/2 tspn sea salt and 6 oz of water, in a glass. Invert the glass over your navel and soak for 15 minutes a day. Again, blow dry the area. Keeping it clean and dry will allow you to get rid of the infection and heal properly. I would take these steps for 6 weeks just to be on the safe side.

Boring answer I know but seek medical advice, you dont want to risk a blood infection or something like that. I have allergies and can only wear titanium bars so check what your bar is made from. Natural products like horn and bone are also less likely to set up reactions/infections.
After this length of time there is clearly something wrong if you get puss from it and better to have to take it out for a while than be scarred for life mate.

My belly button got infected too. I tried everything...bactine, neosporin, the stuff they gave me at the parlor...nothing worked until I finally asked my then boyfriend about it.
He told me to use the hottest water you can stand (do not boil it, obviously, you don't want to burn yourself, just really hot water from the tap) mixed with salt. He has had multiple peircings over his life, and that is what he did.
It stings like hell, but it was the only thing that worked for me.

I had to take mine out for the same reason. The shop that I got it done at telling me it would get better, but after 5 months of a constant infection and a dark brown ring around the top hole I took it out. I used Mederma on it and it lightened a lot.
