I need to connect my HDTV to it's Directv HDTV box. I would like to use HDMI as I believe it to be the best. However my Audio Reciever does not have an HDMI input\Output. Can I connect my video to the directv box using HDMI and then use an optical cable for my audio. Or would there be another ideal setup.

Thanks!

If your box is like mine, you don't have a hdmi out on the box. A hdmi out would give you both audio and video. My box has a DVI (digital ideo interface) which is a bulkier looking pin output, kinda like an old printer cable. You need a DVI to HDMI cable. Your box should have either a coaxial or optical output for sound, both are digial signals and you'll get a cleaner and louder signal over the stereo rca plugs. When hooking up the new cable turn your box off and unplug the box from the wall power outlet before taking the component cables off. The box needs to reset itself or the signal won't be optimized for hdmi and you'll get a snowy signal that fades in and out. Hope this helps, it's more info than I had when I did mine. I actually called customer service and they told me about resetting the box.

Ignore the 1st answer- the person didn't remember you asked about a receiver as well as the sat box...

Yes, you can run the HDMI from the sat box to the TV, and then run a optical or coaxial cable from the sat box to your audio receiver for digital audio and surround sound.

Just make sure you turn off your TV speakers as sound will be going to them via the HDMI cable, and you will need to now turn everything on, set the TV to the input where you plugged in your HDMI cable, and set the receiver to whatever input you used for the digital audio...

If all the input changes in your system get out-of-control, look into getting an aftermarket remote to control everything so you do not have to!

Hope this helps...

PS- Your sat box will be pushing no better then 1080i. Component, DVI, and HDMI are all capable of this. One really isn't better than the other under THESE circumstances (component cannot handle 1080p...), and if someone tells you they are- they haven't worked in home theater for the last 10 years ;)

HDMI is the one cable solution for HD video with digital audio and not necessarily the best picture! RGB and DVI can both offer a HD picture option(no audio) that can be every bit as good and in some case better than HDMI. All of this will depend on your current equipment capabilities, length and quality of cables used etc.
I would try them all and use which ever setup looks best - If there is no difference(which may be the case) go with whats cheaper and easier and return the other cables.
Goodluck!

Yup! Run the HDMI cable from the HDTV to your box, then run a TOSlink digital opitcal cable to your receiver for the audio on it.

You answered your own question. That is the ideal setup. HDMI to TV then optical to receiver. Works perfectly for me.

You should set an Additional video output device ... for ATI Video Cards Use your Catalyst control panel for Nvidia use this program which was installed with your NVIDIA video card drivers. There is an option in both programs you choose video out only for display, for both of them when your PLASMA will extends your display, for both of them when one duplicating another one and use only your connected video output. Hope it will help...
