It would be done by a certified vet,but I was wondering if there is an age limit on getting it done.

The earlier a puppy is docked, the better! Many vets like to carry out the procedure before 3 days of age, but in some small breeds it can be left until the puppy has reached 5 days of age.

The tail is part of the spine and had part of the spinal cord running thru it , and has a lot of blood flow thru it so a very painful and messy process so should only be done at a very young age, I had to have a partial amp on a 3 year old greyhound only a couple inches removed since the tail was infected after injury and was a total pain to get healed up and I spent the next 3 months cleaning blood off the ceiling and walls on almost a daily basis as it just sprayed every where when he started wagging his tail and trying to keep bandages was h#ll, and every time he bumped it stitches would tear out so had to keep taking him back to have it resewn, if there was a way to avoid an amp again I would definitely find an alternative solution

A pic from 2 months after surgery all the hair is pulled out from constantly pulling off the bandages , actually looks better that what is had as he also had an allergic reaction to the bandages but the black area is the dried granulated flesh from where the skin pulled away and dried blood after about taking him back in 5 times to resew the vet could no longer sew up so I had to leave uncovered and let the skin regrow and recover the stump again, the vet even tried keeping him for a week trying to get it healed post surgery I finally took 2 weeks off work right after the vets attempt and the dog went every where with me holding his tail down to prevent bumping it and used clotting powder every time it started to bleed and had to apply a spray on liquid to try and get the flesh to granulate and get it healed since the skin had pulled away from the end.

dealing with cuts and scrapes and puncture wounds is a piece of cake compared to what it took to heal his tail after amputation
The closer to the base the bigger the bones the more blood, and more healing required and more pain for the dog that is why my vet did not cut back farther, and every time you dog sits they risk banging it it and possibly reopening the stitches and because at the base there is more surface area to become infected

Well considering that the tails are done at 2-3 days of age for a tail docking.. Anything after that is done by the vet and is an amputation.. it is a bloody mess that is easily infected.

I have never had it done like that myself but I talked to a girl who imported a Doberman puppy and she got his tail done. She said she would never put another dog thru amputation again.. If she couldn't have it done young, it would have to be left natural..

A dog must have it's tail docked before it's 3 days old. When their puppies they don't really pay attention or mess with their tails. Although as they get older they pay more attention to their tails. So imagine how much pain it would go through if it started paying attention to it.

A dogs tail is very sensative and is usually cropped within the first few weeks of life before the bones have solidified.(Become solid)
It would be very painful and cause the dog alot of fear and stress to do this at an older age.
Unless he has a problem medically with his tail, please don't put him/her through that.

DP is exactly right... my boston had to have about an inch to an inch and a half taken off due to an injury that didn't heal properly before we got him. it was very painful and it did take quite awhile to heal. lots of steroids to keep the itching down as well. every time he bumped it, it would break open and he cried horribly. it is very cruel if your doing it for looks...

I wouldn't dock it at all. Imagine all the pain it will have to go through.
