A telovision uses a remote that sends pulses of IF light, inside the TV, the reciever decodes the pulses into commands (I.E. on/off) , could I take the reciever and wire it to a motor so I could turn it off and on with the remote control?

You don't have to take it out. You can get RF remote and IR bugs that stick over the sensor. It basically turns the IR into RF. Sorry, I can't remember the company that made them.

You can buy special adaptors for home appliances to turn appliances on/off using a remote control. Check web sites for home automation.

TV IR sensors communicate to other components in the TV using special I2C commands. You can't just connect them to any motor without a lot more work.
