Hiccups are described as an "involunatary spasm of the diaphragm". Hiccups are seemed to be caused by eating too fast, drinking a cold beverage while eating a hot meal, consuming spicy food, laughing hysterically, or crying. They are actually a skip of a beat in your heart (as I heard) but I'm not sure about that. I hope that helps.

A hiccup is an involuntary spasm of the diaphragm, which results in a sudden rush of air into the lungs causes the epiglottis to close resulting in the familiar noise. Hiccups often are caused by things which cause an irregularity in breathing, eating to fast, drinking to much, crying or laughing. Certain home remedies at times can prove effective although hiccups generally cure themselves after a short period.

A hiccup also mean a slight abnormality or aberration in a usual pattern.

Excessive eating, alcohol, excitement or stress can over-stimulate the phrenic nerves – which control the diaphragm. The diaphragm then contracts involuntarily. Then at the same time, the glottis – the part of the larynx where the vocal chords are located – closes up. And according to gastro-enterologist Patricia Raymond, this results in the spasms and the odd “hic” sound that repeats every few seconds. A typical case of hiccups only lasts a few minutes, but some can go on and on. And while there’s no cure, holding your breath or breathing into a paper bag can help. It “resets” your phrenic nerves – kind of like rebooting a computer.

Hiccups are the spasming of your diaphram. They are caused when you get to much air in your stomach. This happens when you eat or drink to fast. Basically your body has three ways to rid the stomach of air. Farts, burbs, hiccups. Slow down when you eat.

hiccups are spasms of the diaphragm, the muscle with which we breath, and are caused usually by eating or drinking too quickly, or any irritation to the hiatus, the sphincter between your stomach and esophagus.
