Let a cop explain the legal consequences of physical violence and then sit down and discuss with him/her alternatives, like good communication, to solving whatever's getting under their skin. Communication specialists can be hired for the task, or grounding them for a specified amt of time each day with a BOOK on communication skills as an alternative, etc. OR if the kid has some kind of Oppositional Disorder (which is a REAL disorder) he/she can be evaluated and treated appropriately.
Hope this helps a smidge.

Grounding your child for an excessive period of time isn't going to teach them any kind of lesson. All its going to do is cause their resentment to build up everyday, and make them lash out again. Personally, I don't feel that a child should be grounded longer than a week. If he/she has constant disobedience problems -- especially if they are violent -- you need to consult a counselor. Its one thing to ground your child for running up the phone bill or breaking curfew ... those are normal things that all kids do. This sounds like it goes alot deeper and maybe you need to consult the help of a professional.

If they were disrespectful and tried to actually physically harm you, I would say they would be grounded until they learned some respect.
if it is a disobedience, I would take away their priviledges one by one until they 'got the picture' of what it is they were to do and obey.
some kids learn quickly, others take a LONG time to figure it all out.

My kids are only 3 & 4, they go to time out for the same time as there age. (three min, or four min) I think grounding time really depends on you, the child and the severity of what they are being punished for. Sorry I could't help more than that. Good luck.

I usually do a day to day grounding
if they are bad , I say ok tomorrow you are grounded
if they dont pull their socks up the next day , then I add another day
all kids want to go out and they hate grounding .... a minute is too long for them... so this works well

an good belt sound about right to me, or a switch or paddle which ever you prefer, that is not a time out offense (you did not give age, so this is directed at older than 8 about, younger a hand will work fine)
Pro 22:15 Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.
Pro 23:13 Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.
Pro 29:15 The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.

if they took a swing at me I'd smack them down then forget about it.
grounding only punishes you, not them.

They should listen to the Bible, and stone them. It's the only rational thing to do.
