You're questioning religion because you're smart. There is no true religion. I'm not going to pretend I know what the truth is but I can tell you one thing I know for certain and that is that NOBODY has all the answers and NO religion is the right one.
Do this: Live your life to it's fullest potential, do well by this earth and others and you will have created a meaningful life and made a generous contribution.

My friend, you are an Atheist who hasn't realized it yet. The path to the realization that there is no God is long and often hard for people taught all their lives that such a thing will get them thrust into hell. Let me put it this way, you have been comforted by the thought the was an old man in the sky watching over you your whole life. As your knowledge grew, your ability to rationalize his existence waned. I was at this crossroads a couple of years ago and I won't lie, the death of faith is painful. Now, here on the other side I look at life a whole different way. I live for today, I love my family and all around me. I intend to achieve immortality through the impression I make on the lives I touch. No God means we can change this world instead of helplessly watching it spiral to Armageddon. No God means the possibility of less suffering in the world. I know it is a tough journey but freedom from religion is truly freedom. Contact me if you want to know more. Also, pick up a copy of any of the works of Richard Dawkins or Sam Harris. I hope this helps.

God is real, but I doubt you will find it in Christianity, not that a church is a bad place to go or meet people, it's just that they won't give you the answers you need. As for the answers you do need, I think it's best to come up with some really good questions and ask yourself honestly these questions, open your heart and think with your mind, and listen to that tiny voice inside of your head and see what it has to say. Once you begin to trust yourself more, this voice will open up and explain all the things that you would ever need to know. Some people like to think that this voice is their guardian angel, or others who don't share such a spiritual belief may just as well call it their conscience. Either way, the truth is inside of you dear, and all you have to do is ask the right questions and communicate with yourself, and you will help yourself out of any situation.

Artificial insemination is considered relatively normal today. It does not require a man for the act of implanting does it? For the Creator of the universe, what would be the problem with whipping up a little special DNA sperm? For todays' humans it is almost normal. Back then it was entirely miraculous!
Why would the Creator need or want to prove himself to one of his creations? Just look at the rest of creation. Do we need to shrink ourselves to the size of an ant or microbe to prove we exist to them?
As for religion. Begin with our Creator is the only one deserving of worship. Another creation is not. That Creator would have provided the generations with instructions about what he wanted our purpose to be. To avoid this being too long an answer nobody wants to read, let's just skip to ...the answer is the Bible.
Many religions claim to follow the Bible. How to get the right one? Start with the basics. Does their teachings match the Bible?
In your question, you indicated fear of going to an unpleasant place, hell or just the dark end. What does the Bible say? In the back of almost every Bible, there is a concordenance. Listed under key words are most scriptures with key words in them. Under "Dead" find a reference to Eccles. 9: 5-7, 12. Actually, it will only have one verse but read the whole 4.
So the Bible says the dead cannot be in pain or pleasure, estentially asleep. Is that not good news or at least comforting news? It also gives you your first step to the one true religion of the Creator. Any religion claiming that the dead can be tortured can't be the true religion! Now go on to other beliefs just that way. It will not take long.

I will be impressed if anyone can really nail the answer to your question in this format. I would imagine this will take some soul searching on your part. However, here is my answer - given as a Christian.
The first question that needs to be answered is "does God exist?". I personally have seen enough evidence in the world to come to the conclusion that I believe there is a creator.
Second question. How can we know God? Like you said there are multiple religions and expressions of Faith. I have done some study (less then some and more then others) and I have come to the conclusion that the Bible is the most reliable source for discovering truth about God. It is enduring, historically verified, prophetically verified, miraculously constructed, and it has had tremendous impact on my life.
You say you would like God to show Himself. Scripture and history tell me that he did just that when he put on skin and walked this earth as Jesus.
My answer will most assuredly raise more questions, but hopefully it is a starting point for thought. If I can be a help to you on this journey, feel free to e-mail me. I may not respond right away, but I will respond.
By the way, congratulations on the imminent arrival of that little one. I think you are wise to seriously consider what part Faith is going to play in your life and that of your children.

do a little research. i did.
i read parts of the Quran, the Bible, the Torah. I read books by Buddhists and Mormons and Protestants. I found that the best religion is one that does not force you to live by ridiculous rules, but rather pay homage to the Earth and be a good person to all.
Read about Buddism and tell me that isnt the best religion in the world. It preaches humanity, tolerance, forgiveness, peace and humility. There are no stupid, pointless holidays to spend money on, and the only thing they ask you to do is be kind, be humble and treat the earth well.
you are going to get lots of responses from radicals preaching to you about Jesus and God and blah blah blah. In the end its going to be up to you to choose - so choose wisely. READ. Find out what makes each religion different from the next. And don't fall victim to promises and lies.
aka: The Bible.
LOL.
There is no hell, your body will go back to the Earth and your soul will go back into the energy of our universe. Be a good person, be honest and kind, generous and forgive those that do you wrong. Teach yoru child respect, humanity, love, tolerance, appreciation, giving and humility.

I'm an ex-Christian atheist, OK.?
So it may seem odd that what I recommend is a fairly old book, very cheaply available second-hand from ABE called
"The Case For Christianity" by Colin Chapman
As well as looking at the big questions of life with special reference to Christianity, it contains descriptions and discussions of almost all other major beliefs and philosophies which also offer answers to life and its problems.
And these are, as far as I can judge, the most unbiased I've ever encountered in one volume.
See what's convincing, and what makes sense to you.

God created the universe so making Mary pregnant; splitting a couple cells was no big deal for God.
Find a good Bible believing church , some can be very uppity and will be of no help. Give a 7Th day Adventist church a try. Been there and the other Church's just didn't have it for me; went to the Adventist and was hugged and cared for. They have a great web site also for answering allot of questions.

It is not wrong at all to doubt existance of GOD and believe that atoms one day thought they are living things and started life on earth or may be some where in universe.
Out of so many religions to pick one is difficult and after choosing a religion, it will be more difficult to pick the sect which has the truth :) Indeed tough..!!!
Do you think you need a savior?
Bible teaches about a Savior GOD who came as human (i hope you agree that GOD can't come for each and every generation coz there will be always someone who didnt recognise HIM). HE took a path and charted the course for you and me to walk on -to HIS home..!!
If you think you can believe in stars and their distance from earth according to science or the temparature of sun or of stars some thousands of light years from here, then start accepting that you can believe in any fairy tales. Who had gone there and did the measurement? We all practice faith.
GOD is not hard to believe in. Get yourself in the darkest room possible where there is not a ray of light and you can't even see your hand, then ask yourself who are you? If you can seperate your mind from believing that you are NOT mere body-physical thing then GOD is next step.
May You find the TRUTH..!! and have enough FAITH to accept it...

First question: Have you been born again by the Holy Spirit through faith in Jesus Christ?
I ask because I have come to know the kingdom of God is a present reality that can be experienced in a very tangible way. This is the gift of eternal life received through faith which Jesus and the New Testament speaks so much of. In fact Jesus said "Unless a man is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God" (John 3:3)
I was born again when I didn't even know such a thing was possible. My life has been greatly changed, and that was over 36 years ago.
Please watch this video if your are able:

peace to you.
