"Alpha", the first letter of the Greek alphabet, is considered the beginning of a series or sequence; "the Alpha and Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end".

Therefore, when they ask you to use the Alpha letters it means just the First letter.

I believe they mean the first letters.

They mean not to use punctuation such as - and '
usually because their computer program can not
correctly handle it.
